Putnam Science Academy: Hamidou Diallo commits to Kentucky

Diallo Picks Kentucky

Putnam Science Academy post-graduate guard Hamidou Diallo announced his commitment to Ketucky during a Saturday afternooon press conference in New York City.

He will join John Calipari's program immediately but isn't expected to fully suit up before next season.

Diallo was a virtual unknown when he made his New England debut, at the 2014 Memorial Day Super 16 Showcase. He returned a month later to take part in the Elite 75 College Showcase and didn't pick up his first division I offer until the following month's July live period. Two-and-a-half years later, he had established himself as a top national prospect, earned a gold medal with USA Basketball and wound up with his choice of five-star suitors.

Wendell Carter wins Morgan Wootten National POY award

... Wendell Carter, the No. 3 overall player in the ESPN 100 and the No. 1 power forward in the class, won the boys' 2017 Morgan Wootten National Player of the Year award on Tuesday.

"I was shocked when I got the news," said Carter, who will compete for the East squad later this month in the McDonald's All American Game. "There are so many talented and flashy players in the game."

Carter, who is 6-foot-9, signed a national letter of intent last year to play at Duke. He is a senior at Pace Academy in Georgia and has led the Knights to their second straight appearance in the state championship game.

ESPN announces final 2017 rankings

ESPN announced their final rankings for the class of 2017 on Tuesday and, as usual, the list featured plenty of New England products.

Former Putnam Science guard Hamidou Diallo wasn't included after enrolling at Kentucky at mid-year, which made Tremont Waters the top ranked local prospect on the list. The Notre Dame West Haven and Expressions Elite product checked in at 32nd overall.

Only four spots behind was recent Providence commit Makai Ashton-Langford as the Brewster Academy and Mass Rivals product went virtually his entire career as a top 40 prospect in the country.

Diallo Takes Part in NBA Combine

It was only a few short months ago that Hamidou Diallo was beginning the season for Putnam Science Academy.

One of the top prospects in the national class of 2017, Diallo made the decision to enroll at Kentucky mid-year but chose to red-shirt for the remainder of the season with most expecting him to be getting a jump start on the 2017-2018 season.

As it turns out, Diallo might never play an actual game for Kentucky.

A few weeks ago he declared for this year's NBA Draft without hiring an agent, a decision that over 100 other college players made in order to be able to go through the process of participating in the draft combine (if invited) and work-out for interested NBA teams, and still retain the possibility of returning to college for next season.

Final 2017 Rankings Announced

With champions crowned months ago, awards handed out, and most recruitments decided, the class of 2017 is officially in the books and that means it is time to take final inventory of what our region has produced.

2017 should be remembered, first and foremost, for the incredible collective success our region produced in both the prep and grassroots worlds. There were national championships, undefeated seasons, and tremendous depth of talent in both seasons.

In terms of individual prospects, the class will be remembered for the first prep-to-pros jump (should Hamidou Diallo elect to stay in the NBA Draft) we've seen in over a decade, the deep and talented point guard class (Tremont Waters, Makai Ashton-Langford, Wabissa Bede, and Kellan Grady among others), and a unique group of prospects like Waters, Jermaine Samuels, Kimani Lawrence, and Hasahn French - all of whom had big reputations four years ago when first arriving on the high school scene and leave having held the high ground for their entire careers.

Yags’ Point Forward - 2017 Against the Rest

The final rankings for New England’s class of 2017 are now set in stone, putting the finishing touches on a historic group that featured elite prospects who still have a lot to figure out over the next few weeks. As we did last year, it’s time to take a look at how this year’s graduating class stacks up against the groups that came before them.

The best way to measure prospect classes against one another is to start at the very top. Using the ESPN-100 as our guide, we’ll examine how the Class of 2017’s elite players, unique strengths and overall depth holds up against other graduating classes in New England’s recent past.

CLASS OF 2012 REMAINS THE STANDARD
