Del Gallo seeks to match brother’s NCAA title
Peter Del Gallo is one of two USM wrestlers competing at the Division III championships in Cleveland.

...“He’s focused. He’s zeroed-in on what he needs to do.”

Del Gallo, a former Gardiner High star, is in Cleveland for his first NCAA Division III national tournament, where he’s seeded fourth at 125 pounds. His first match is Friday against Wartburg’s Brennen Doebel.

“It’s definitely exciting and I’m proud to have made it this far,” Del Gallo said, “but it’s not over yet.”

He’s one of two USM wrestlers to qualify for the NCAA championships. Austin Shorey, a freshman from Noble High, qualified at 141 pounds with a 31-7 record and will face David Flynn of Augsburg in his opening match.

Women power: Ripley, Merrifield, Fonger secure All-American mat status
Ripley wins national championship, Merrifield, Fonger finish runners-up

ALLEN, TEXAS — Three former Midcoast high school wrestlers — who now shine on the collegiate level — experienced stellar success on the mats at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) women's national championships on Thursday, March 8 at the Allen Event Center.

The talented trio — Husson University’s Shannon Ripley and University of Maine’s Hilary Merrifield and Sierra Fonger — amassed one individual title and two runner-up finishes, as well as all three being tabbed All-Americans at the conclusion of the meet.

Ripley, a freshman for the Eagles and 2017 Oceanside High School of Rockland graduate, beat the fourth, first and second seeds in succession to nail down the national championship in the 143-pound weight class.
