Colby hockey set for NESCAC final four
Mules to meet Wesleyan in conference semifinals Saturday.

... Just a year after losing at home to Wesleyan University in the New England Small College Athletic Conference quarterfinals, sixth-seeded Colby will meet the Cardinals in the NESCAC semifinals with a chance at making program history.

With a win Saturday, Colby (13-10-2) will advance to the conference championship game for the first time since the league adopted the current playoff format in 2001.

“We can’t get ahead of ourselves, but nothing would surprise me with this team,” Colby head coach Blaise MacDonald said. “It wouldn’t surprise me if we played for a few more weeks.”

NICHOLS HALTS #4 UNE IN CCC FINAL, 8-3

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Fifth-seeded Nichols College struck for three goals in a span of 97 seconds during the initial portion of the 2nd period, breaking open a one-goal game on the way to an 8-3 victory over third-seeded University of New England in the final of the 2018 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Men's Ice Hockey Championship on Saturday night (Mar. 3) at a sold-out Harold Alfond Forum.

The Bison (17-8-3) captured their third road win of the league tournament to earn the CCC's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship.

The Nor'easters (20-5-3) must now wait and hope for a selection into the national field; the four at-large picks to fill out the 12-team bracket will be announced Monday morning (10:30 a.m.) on NCAA.com.

Scott Cuthrell (CCC 3rd Team) and Filip Virgili each had two goals and one assist for Nichols, while Hogan Davidson accounted for three assists. Between the pipes, Colin Brennan (CCC 3rd Team) turned in 36 saves.

The visitors jumped ahead just 48 seconds into the match on a goal by Vincent Crivello. UNE answered at the 8:15 mark on a goal by Tyler Seltenreich (CCC Rookie of the Year / 3rd Team), but Chris Deming restored the NC advantage four minutes later.

Cuthrell netted goals at 5:57 and 7:10 of the middle frame, before setting up J.B. Baker (CCC 2nd Team) in another 24 ticks to extend the margin to 5-1.

Dimitris Jones cashed in on a power-play chance for the Nor'easters to make it 5-2 entering the 3rd stanza, and Brady Fleurent (CCC 1st Team) reduced the deficit to 5-3 with 14 minutes to go. However, Virgili found the back of the net less than two minutes later to slow the UNE momentum.

Nicholas Mangone padded the cushion (7-3) with a short-handed goal just past the midway point, and an empty-netter from Virgili capped the scoring down the stretch.

For the Nor'easters, starting goaltender Ben Churchfield made 12 stops in a little more than 27 minutes of action, before Tate Sproxton recorded 14 saves the rest of the way. Jones and Fleurent also had assists during the evening to end with two points.

Lawrence's heroics earn him second NESCAC Player of the Week honor

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College goaltender Sean Lawrence (Granite Bay, Calif.) earned his second New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Men's Hockey Player of the Week honor on Monday.

Lawrence extended his senior season by helping the Mules win their first-ever NESCAC title Sunday with a 4-1 win against Trinity College. He leads Colby into an NCAA first round game at University of New England this Saturday at 7 p.m.

Lawrence had 38 saves in the championship game against Trinity College and 39 stops in a semifinal win over Wesleyan. He had a .975 save percentage while allowing just one goal in each game.

Lawrence allowed just three goals in Colby's three NESCAC playoff games. In Colby's current 5-0-2 unbeaten streak, Lawrence has allowed just eight goals in the seven games.

In the latest national statistics, Lawrence ranks third in the country in save percentage (.940).

Mules will make tourney debut at UNE

...The Mules will face No. 4 University of New England in the first round of the Division III national championship tournament Saturday at the Harold Alfond Forum in Biddeford. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Colby (15-10-2) earned its berth in the 12-team tournament by winning the New England Small College Athletic Conference championship Sunday with a 4-1 win over top-seeded Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. Trinity, the NESCAC regular season champion and 2015 national champion, did not earn an at-large bid.

“We started off hot this year, went through a little bit of a down period, and then got it going at right time,” said Colby senior goal Sean Lawrence, who made 38 saves in the NESCAC title game. “We finished (the regular season) two points away from second place. It was really tight throughout the league. When we beat Trinity with a couple weeks left in the regular season, we knew we could beat any team. We just kept at it.”
