Scorching hot Lawrence leads Colby men's hockey into its first Frozen Four

WATERVILLE - Sean Lawrence spent the majority of his first two years of college hockey on the bench, but that was at Quinnipiac University, a top tier Division I program.

Once Lawrence realized that his door was closed with the Bobcats he saw the stable doors burst open with the Mules.

"Obviously didn’t go as planned, but came here decided to work as hard as I could and I’m glad I’m having a successful year," Lawrence said.

Colby has championship connection behind bench
Assistant coach Mike Latendresse was a freshman when UMaine won the Division I hockey title in 1993.

...There are similarities between the two championship runs, Maine’s in 1993 and Colby’s this month. And if anyone would recognize a resemblance, it would be Mules assistant coach Mike Latendresse.

“I was just talking to (head coach Blaise MacDonald) about it the other day,” said Latendresse, now 47, who was a freshman on the Black Bears’ first national championship team in 1993. “We had a great head coach in Shawn Walsh, and I think we have a great head coach now in Blaise. The players, too. We had the ability to score a crazy amount of goals back in the day, we could do a lot of damage. In a similar way, I think we have that with the Mules, too. And there’s the similarity in goaltenders. Mike Dunham and Garth Snow both went on the play in the NHL, and Sean Lawrence is playing so well right now. We had a defensive corps that was solid, and that’s what we have now.

“This run here has really brought back a lot of memories for me.”

Hockey notes: Colby’s O’Connor flies under the radar
Hewson, Leprine return to Mules' lineup in second half of season and make big impacts

...“I like it that way, to be honest. I don’t like much attention,” O’Connor said. “I’m kind of an under the radar type of guy. I like doing the little things that earn you the respect that you want as a player.”

O’Connor, though, is not overlooked when it comes to on-ice contributions for the Mules, who are headed to the program’s first Frozen Four appearance this week in Lake Placid, New York. Fourth on the team in scoring with 11 goals and 24 points, O’Connor’s input comes in myriad other forms.

He’s Colby’s go-to man on defensive zone faceoffs, one of its best penalty killers and capable of handling either checking duties or offensive production.

Colby College run to Frozen Four carries storied history

...“In all the games I have played in, I have coached, I have witnessed, I have never seen a goal go in in the last second of play,” Kelley said. “I said, ‘My god, this is a team of destiny.’”

Kelley added that watching Colby from afar has rekindled his love for the school and program.

“I loved my time at Colby. My family and wife all love Colby, and I thought I had pretty much accomplished what I wanted to accomplish at BU and at the pro level,” Kelley said. “I loved the pro level and the game there.
