Colby College goalie Sean Lawrence makes presence felt
Stellar play from senior leads Mules historic postseason run.

...Talk to any member of the Colby College men’s hockey team this week and they will tell you that senior goalie Sean Lawrence is a big reason the Mules will compete in the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time in program history.

“There’s no way to overstate it,” Colby captain and defenseman Dan Dupont said of Lawrence’s postseason significance. “He’s been incredible. If we did team voting for MVP, he’d probably get every single vote. It’s hard to put into words.”

The Mules will travel to the University of New England in Biddeford on Saturday night for a first-round matchup. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7.

College hockey notes: Cam MacDonald emerges as Colby’s go-to goal-getter
Decker helps anchor Mules defensive corps; Colby commits to blocking shots.

...In the New England Small College Athletic Conference championship game last Sunday, MacDonald scored twice in the third period to clinch Colby’s win. His first goal came just 13 seconds after top-seeded Trinity had cut the Mules lead to 2-1.

“I’ve been around Cam’s game since he was a little, tiny kid,” Blaise MacDonald said. “One of his best attributes I’ve always said is puck luck. I’ve never seen a kid in big games where pucks bounce to him and things go in the net like it does for him. But he works for it. He gets himself into the right spots.”

Cam MacDonald doesn’t necessarily view himself as an elite-level goal-scorer. In his first three seasons at Colby, he had just 17 total goals. He registered five goals and 16 points as a junior.

Colby beats UNE, moves on in Division III tournament

...“It’s just about confidence,” said Colby senior goalie Sean Lawrence, who posted his eighth straight start with 30 or more saves. “We know we’re a good hockey team. Other people might not think we are just because of our record, but we know what we can do. We kept it even (keel) throughout the whole game.”

Sophomore Kienan Scott scored a pair of goals for the Mules (16-10-2), and Lawrence made 33 saves to backstop the victory. Michael Rudolf and Joe Schuler also accounted for Colby goals.

UNE (20-6-3) took leads of 1-0 in the first period and 2-1 in the second period courtesy of goals from Ryan Bloom and Liam Neuman.

Colby College hockey relies on fourth line’s presence
Fadden, Schuler and Hale have helped lead Mules to Division III quarterfinals.

...“It was pretty nuts,” Schuler recalled Monday. “He comes to the bench with blood dripping off his face everywhere and he’s screaming, and the boys definitely feed off that. Some guys are score-a-goal guys, Griff’s about blocking a shot, and it’s sometimes more (impactful). The energy is through the roof when stuff like that happens.”

The legend sets up like this: Midway through the third period of a 4-2 win over the University of New England in the first round of the NCAA tournament, Fadden threw himself headlong into a Ryan Burr slap shot, blocking the shot and sending the Mules off on the rush to the other end of the rink.

The price? A broken tooth and a busted cage on Fadden’s helmet.

College hockey notebook: Rudolf comes up big for Colby College
Mules' defensemen key contributors as team prepares for NCAA quarterfinals.

... In the Mules’ win at the University of New England in the first round of the NCAA Division III national tournament last Saturday, Rudolf’s complete game in all three zones didn’t go unnoticed. For the Switrzerland native, the effort could be measured far beyond his second-period power play goal. He’s joined others in taking a page out of the 2004 Boston Red Sox playbook and asking — as one of only eight teams left vying for the national championship — “Why not us?”

Colby will play Geneseo at 7 p.m. Saturday in a national quarterfinal.

“The motivation isn’t a problem now,” Rudolf said. “We’re at a place where the program hasn’t been in a while, so we’re kind of in new territory. We want to keep going as much as we can.”

Rudolf has nine goals this season, but his two-way game carries added significance. As a 6-foot, 190-pound pivot, he’s able to create some space for linemates Cam MacDonald (15 goals) and Justin Grillo (21 points).
