Mutual devotion, respect works for Lewiston sister act

...“Kasey is more of, she’s coming here. ‘Hey, my sister goes there and I might want to play basketball,’” Beaudoin said. “To be honest, with Kasey, I was pretty much hands off and said, ‘Hey, if this something you want to do, we would love to have you, but if it is not, I ultimately want you to be happy.

“With all of our players, especially to start their careers, I think there is a little transition period. I think it is going to take a little bit of time with her, but having her at practice, she going to push our other guys. Defensively, she adds something that maybe we don’t necessarily have.”

But Beaudoin has known Jenessa for four years and has come to rely on her in backcourt.

“She is one our best shooters. She is a very good interior passer,” Beaudoin said. “When she is driving the lane, she has the ability to find players and is willing to make the bounce pass, which is kind of in some ways a lost art in basketball.

Seniors leading Bates Bobcats into brighter future

...“As coach has said, we have such a pivotal year for our program,” Nason, the team’s captain, said. “So (we’re) just really valuing what it means to be a senior this year, especially with a young freshman class, just being able to shift our program in that right direction.”

Davenport said players in the Class of 2018 has always had at least a bit of a leadership role because there has been so many of them. This year, that role increases; because they are seniors, obviously, but also because this year’s squad has six freshmen. (In between are one junior and two sophomores).

The seniors will be counted on to guide the freshmen through what can be a brutal NESCAC schedule. There’s reigning national champion Amherst, as well as Tufts, which finished last season ranked second nationally, and Bowdoin, which was No. 23.

But, coming off an 8-16 (3-7 in NESCAC) season, the Bobcats are looking to make a jump of the standings and go into every game with confidence they can compete.

Tough teams early key for Husson women's basketball

..Last year, a tough slate gave the Eagles the extra pull it needed to get a favorable draw in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, where they won and advanced to the second round for the first time in school history. As the school opens the season against St. Lawrence and Williams this weekend, head coach Kissy Walker has that draw in the back of her head, stressing the importance of each win.

"Beating teams within your conferences as well as the teams you play within your region outside of conference," Walker said. "Obviously, getting a win against those teams really helps so we didn't have to play a first round team that was ranked really high."
