College football notebook: NESCAC schools excited about new schedule
For the first time, the league's 10 teams will all play each other, creating a nine-game schedule.

The New England Small College Athletic Conference finally made a move that’s been discussed for decades. This season, NESCAC football teams will play a nine-game schedule, with each school playing every other team. In the past, each team skipped one league opponent and played only eight games.

Bowdoin Coach JB Wells said a nine-game schedule was being discussed 30 years ago, when he was recruited by Trinity.

“The addition of a ninth game in the NESCAC is remarkable,” Wells said.

Captains eager to lead Husson football
Luke Washburn, DJ Allen to play prominent roles for Eagles this season.

...Husson opens the season Sept. 2 at home against Union College. The Eagles went 9-2 last season, and their average margin of victory in ECFC games was just over 28 points. Husson’s closest conference game was a 27-13 win over Norwich, but this season the Cadets have moved on to the New England Women’s and Men’s Conference.

“Luke’s been everything you want in a college football player,” Husson head coach Gabby Price said. “DJ is a solid leader. He had an excellent junior year, and we hope he has an even better senior year. He just loves football.”

All three captains can be expected to lead by example, because that’s what all three have done already. Each was selected to the all-conference first team after Husson went 7-0 in ECFC play last season. Smith was named conference Offensive Player of the Year, running for 1,822 yards and 17 touchdowns. After making 56 tackles and 12 sacks, Washburn was ECFC Defensive Player of the Year.

Football becomes a reality for UNE
The school's first team takes the field for its first practice session.

...“We felt we could trust our kids being here, and that the schooling would come first and then the football,” Lee Roberts added.

This year, UNE will play a nine-game schedule, all off campus. The first six games will be against New England Division III junior varsity teams, opening Sept. 2 at Curry College in Milton, Massachusetts. The final three games will be against prep schools, including an Oct. 21 game against Kirkland (New Jersey) Academy at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland.

The Nor’easters will be full varsity members of Commonwealth Coast Football in 2018.
