CBB football games start Saturday
Colby, Bates, Bowdoin all looking for first wins of season.

...“Regardless on how the season is going, you have a season within a season, and an opportunity to play for a championship in a great rivalry game. It’s been a great week and a fun week with these guys,” Colby head coach Jonathan Michaeles said after Thursday’s practice.

The series begins Saturday with Bates at Colby. It continues next week when Bowdoin plays at Bates, and concludes on Nov. 11 when Colby plays at Bowdoin. Bates has won the CBB title in each of the last three seasons, and four of the last five. In 2013, the series was a three-way tie. Colby last won the CBB in 2005, while Bowdoin’s last title came in 2010.

Wesleyan Football Holds Off Late Bowdoin Rally

video highlights https://youtu.be/Gpej3oAc5_I

RUNSWICK, Maine - Mike Breuler caught three touchdown passes as the Wesleyan University football team held off Bowdoin 21-10 on Saturday afternoon at Whittier Field.

The Cardinals improve to 5-2 this season while the Polar Bears remain winless at 0-7.

Game Highlights

Bowdoin controlled most of the opening quarter and cashed in on a 31-yard field goal from Andrew Sisti to take a 3-0 lead with 3:01 remaining in the period.
Wesleyan answered with an eight-play, 60-yard drive, capped off by a 10 yard pass from Mark Piccirillo, who rolled out to the right and found Breuler in the end zone for a 7-3 lead early in the second quarter.
After a Bowdoin three-and-out, the Cardinals marched 76 yards in 12 plays, scoring on another Piccirillo strike to Breuler over the middle from 20 yards to increase the lead to 14-3.
Late in the half, Bowdoin failed on a fourth down conversion at midfield, but the Cardinals couldn't cash in as a 47-yard field goal by Corey Phillips was blocked, keeping it 14-3 at halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, Wesleyan made it 21-3 on the opening play of the fourth as Breuler hauled in a back-shoulder catch from Piccirillo to end a six-play, 60-yard drive.
Bowdoin didn't go away, however, stopping Wesleyan on a fourth down deep in their own territory later in the period and then scoring on an 85-yard pass from Griff Stalcup to Nick Vailas - the fourth longest pass in school history - to cut the lead to 21-10 with 4:36 to go.
The Polar Bears had a late bid to cut further into the Cardinal lead, but a late drive stalled inside the Wesleyan 10 with under a minute to play.
By The Numbers

The Cardinals totaled 389 yards of offense as Piccirillo passed for 259 and also rushed for 54 for Wesleyan.
Gerald Hawkins (seven receptions, 99 yards) and Breuler (seven catches, 96 yards) led a balanced receiving effort by the Cardinals.
Griff Stalcup posted a career-high 317 yards passing on 26-47 attempts, becoming Bowdoin's first 300 yard passer since Tim Drakeley against Colby in 2015.
Vailas caught eight passes for a career-high 167 yards, upping his career receptions total to 102 and becoming just the second Bowdoin player to surpass 100 career catches (Pat Noone, 176).
Bryan Porter chipped in nine catches for 104 yards on the afternoon.
Brandon Morris led the Cardinals with 11 tackles including a sack. Ben Thaw had two pass break-ups.
Bowdoin was led by eight tackles from Francis Rose while Nat Deacon had a pair of sacks.
Up Next

Bowdoin will begin pursuit of the CBB Championship next weekend as they travel to Lewiston to play Bates at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The Cardinals will continue Little Three play against Williams next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
