College football notebook: Colby defense will be tested by Panthers
Middlebury averaging 35 points per game on offense

Colby College’s defensive unit can point to a lot of good things it did in last week’s 24-7 loss to Williams. The Mules held the Ephs to 248 total yards, just 82 on the ground, and Williams controlled the ball for just over 22 minutes. On third down, Williams was just 2 of 12. Those are things the Mules hope to build on when they face a potent Middlebury offense Saturday afternoon.

“It will be a great challenge. We played well as a team (against Williams). I think we had six stops in a row in the second half. That’s the sign of the type of defense we think we can be, that we believe we are. Going into the season we felt the defense would be, and should be, the strength of our team,” Colby head coach Jonathan Michaeles said. ... -panthers/

Big Plays Sink Football In Road Loss at Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. - The Bowdoin College football team stayed within striking distance, but Amherst used a pair of third-quarter touchdowns to pull away in an eventual 31-14 victory on Saturday afternoon at Pratt Field.

The Mammoths remain unbeaten at 3-0 this season while the Polar Bears fall to 0-3.

Game Highlights

Amherst got on the board on their second play from scrimmage in the game when Jack Hickey split the Bowdoin defense for a 52-yard touchdown run.
Bowdoin replied later in the quarter, marching 76 yards on six plays, as quarterback Griff Stalcup found Nick Vailas twice for big gains, the second time a 36-yard touchdown strike to tie the game at 7-7.
The Mammoths scored on their first possession of the second quarter, ending an eight-play, 83-yard drive with a three-yard rush from Hasani Figueroa to take a 14-7 edge. Amherst added a field goal before the half to take a 17-7 lead at intermssion.
After Bowdoin went three-and-out on their first offensive possession of the second half, Amherst got a big punt return from Nate Tyrell, setting up a 38-yard touchdown pass from Ollie Eberth to James O'Regan.
An interception on Bowdoin's next drive set up another Amherst score - this time a 23-yard rush from Eberth to make it 31-7.
Bowdoin was able to trim into the lead in the fourth quarter as a 12-play, 65-yard drive ended with a 24-yard pass from Stalcup to Bryan Porter, cutting the final score to 31-14. ... 0930s3qtba

Bates stays winless with 37-17 loss to Tufts

...McDonald tossed four touchdown passes for Tufts in a 37-17 NESCAC football victory over Bates College at Garcelon Field on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Bobcats turned their offense over to a freshman and might have found the spark they’ve been in search of.

Bates’ pass rush was constant, but McDonald sidestepped the pursuing defenders and took off downfield, or he weaved backward to create time for either a receiver to get free or for the field to open up for McDonald to run for a large gain.

“He’s a phenomenal athlete. He’s the guy that makes their offense go,” Bates coach Mark Harriman said. “Our guys maybe a couple times were a little too tentative going after him because we had missed him early — that didn’t help, either, because once you stop your feet on him, he can get around you. He’s an exceptional player.” ... ts/2208091
