COLBY: ITO EARNS FIRST COLLEGIATE WIN IN VICTORY OVER UMF

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College's Taimu Ito threw a five-hit shutout to earn his first collegiate victory in a 7-0 win over University of Maine at Farmington on Monday in non-conference baseball at Coombs Field at the Colby Baseball/Softball Complex.

Ito, a first-year, had a night of firsts in striking out five and walking two. Besides the win, Ito also collects his first collegiate shutout and first complete game. He managed to get 12 ground outs.

The game was closer than the final score indicates. Neither team managed a run in the opening four innings and the Mules were up 2-0 heading into the top of the seventh inning.

Maine-Farmington starting pitcher Nate Pushard only threw three innings, allowing just two hits and no walks.

The Mules (5-13 overall) scored what turned out to be the game-winning run in the fifth inning. Andrew Sterup reached second on an outfield error, took third on a ground out, and scored on Ryan Quinn's sacrifice fly to center field.

Colby added its second run in the sixth inning after UMF (2-8) had picked off a Mule runner at second base for the second out. Matt Garcia, who had singled, promptly stole second base. After walks to Tyler Mulberry and Andrew Della Volpe loaded the bases, Sterup drew a walk to bring in Garcia.

The Mules scored five unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull away. Quinn and Matt Treveloni each reached on an error to start the inning, with Quinn going to third base. Ryder Arsenault singled in Quinn for a 3-0 lead. After getting the second out, the Colby runners went with a double steal. Garcia's sacrifice fly to left field brought in Treveloni with the fourth run.

Colby was not finished in the seventh inning. Mulberry singled Arsenault to second base and Della Volpe doubled in both runners for a 6-0 margin. Sterup followed with a single to plate Della Volpe.

Sterup finished with two hits, two RBI, and one run. Keenan Iuliano also had a pair of hits for the Mules.

Nick Attalliades-Ryan had two of UMF's five hits. Riley Chickering had a hit and walked once.
