COLBY: LAYTON NAMED TO ALL-NESCAC MEN'S LACROSSE TEAM

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College goalie C.J. Layton (Wakefield, Mass./Belmont Hill) was named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse All-Conference Team on Thursday.

Layton, a sophomore, was selected to the second team.

Layton played just 66 minutes in his first year with the Mules, but was one of the surprise players in the NESCAC this year. He started the season off strong and continually kept Colby in games this year.

Layton was third in the conference in total saves (189) and fifth in save percentage (55.8). The Mules lost five games by two goals or less this season.

With a solid defense in front of him, Layton helped the Mules compete with some of the top teams in the country. His performance of the season was 19 saves in a 10-7 loss to then third-ranked Tufts University. The Jumbos were averaging 18 goals a game at the time. Layton also stopped 12 shots in a 9-5 setback to then 11th-ranked Amherst College, which was averaging 15 goals per game at the time of the game.

Despite some tough NESCAC losses, the Mules improved by two wins in conference play this year. Layton made 17 saves in the Mules' road win at Trinity College. He also helped Colby to another road victory, a 13-10 win at Middlebury College.

Bates success this has been building the past few years

...If you are going to draw a straight line, I would say our 2015 seniors which were the group that led up to a real great win-loss record in a long time after a very disappointing 2014 season," Bates coach Peter Lasagna said. "They are the people that helped us get to the NCAA Tournament for the first time. They get a bow as well. But remember the current seniors were sophomores on that team. They were very well mentored by that group, but they played a pivotal role in our success."

Charlie Fay was a second team All-American that season, midfielder Kyle Weber and defenseman Fred Ulbrick played all 17 games that season as sophomores. Weber was third on the team in goals with 23 and added 11 assists.
