Rosen wins Silver Ball at USTA National Open Men's Singles Grass Court Championships

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Rising junior and 2016 All-American Ben Rosen picked up right where he left off in the spring by finishing second in the 72-player USTA National Open Men's Singles Grass Court Championships, held at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, August 15-21.

Competing in the tournament for the first time, Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) entered as the 12th seed, earning a first-round bye. The tournament had a mix of high school, college, and pro players.

Rosen defeated Clayton Thompson 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 64 and followed that up with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Lee White in the round of 32.

Rosen upended the No. 3 seed, professional tennis player Alex Bose, in the round of 16, a 7-5, 6-1 straight-set victory. In the quarterfinals, Rosen defeated another pro, Dustin Goldenberg, in straight sets as well, by a count of 6-3, 6-2.

Stefan Menichella, of Division I Pepperdine University, challenged Rosen in the semifinals. Rosen prevailed 7-5, 7-5, advancing to the finals. In the finals, Rosen fell to Brown University alumnus Justin Natale, 6-1, 6-3.

Rising senior Chris Ellis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) also earned a bye and defeated Gabe Allen 6-0, 6-0 in the round of 64 before being upended by Menichella in the round of 32 (7-5; 6-7(6); 6-2).

Rosen and Ellis teamed up to defeat the fourth seeded doubles team of Goldenberg and Vidith Huot in the Round of 16 of the Open Doubles Championships by a count of 6-2; 4-6; 6-2 but a nagging ankle injury suffered by Ellis forced the duo to withdraw from their quarterfinals match.

Rosen, Ellis, and rest of the Bates men's tennis team gets their fall season underway Sept. 17-18 at the Middlebury Invitational.
