RIZZO EARNS DISTRICT 1 ACADEMIC HONOR FOR WOMEN'S SOCCER

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College sophomore goalkeeper Sam Rizzo (Swampscott, Mass.) was named to the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA) All-District 1 Academic Women's Soccer Team on Thursday.

Rizzo was one of 12 players from District 1 (New England region) selected. A biology major (neuroscience concentration) at Colby, she had the highest grade point average of any player in District 1. Colby's policy is to not release grade point average information.

Rizzo ranks first in the New England Small College Athletic Conference in total saves (98) and saves per game (6.33). She is third in goalkeeper minutes (1,354), tied for fifth in total wins (6), and tied for sixth in shutouts (4).

Rizzo and Colby's defense kept the Mules in nearly every game this season. She allowed 19 goals in 15 games. Rizzo has 192 career saves after just two years.

A softball player at Colby, Rizzo is a 2016-17 Julius Seelye Bixler Scholar and a Colby Cares About Kids mentor at the College.

Rizzo worked at the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center as a volunteer this past summer, working for children with special needs. She also spent time as a program assistant at the Cotting School, assisting with the supervision and instruction of students with multiple physical and cognitive disabilities.

The salutatorian of the Swampscott High School Class of 2015, Rizzo worked as a mentor and coach for the Special Olympics program at the school. She received numerous awards, including the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award and the Swampscott High School Service Award.
