COLBY 1,600 RELAY TEAM WINS NEW ENGLAND TITLE, BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Colby College men's 1,600 relay team won a New England Division III Men's Track and Field Championship title and smashed the school record on Saturday at Williams College.

Sage Bailin, Brian Sommers, Pedro Caballero, and Marcques Houston had a winning time of 3 minutes, 16.90 seconds. After getting disqualified at last week's NESCAC meet for a runner stepping on the line, the Mules dominated this week. Bridgewater State finished in second place at 3:19.05, Babson College was third, and Tufts University took fourth (3:19.23).

The Colby foursome broke the 18-year-old school record of 3:19.71 set in 1999. Jared Beers, the current Colby head cross country coach and assistant track and field coach, ran the anchor leg on that 1999 relay team. Tyrone Boucaud, Koji Wantanabe, and Emanuel Thomann were the other runners on the relay.

The relay team scored 10 points for the title win and helped the Mules break into the top 10 at ninth with 28 points for the meet.

Roy Donnelly, Sommers, Landon Summers, and Houston also tied their own school record with a 41.81 in taking third place in the 400 relay.

Summers placed fourth in the 110 hurdles (14.82), while James O'Donnell (54.79) was fifth and Bailin (55.30) took sixth in the 400 hurdles.

James Gibson was 10th in the long jump (20-10.75) and finished 13th in the triple jump (43-4.75).

Keith Barnatchez was 15th in the 800 meters (1:56.95), while Griffin Gagnon took 25th with a 15:55.08 in the 5,000 meters.
