COLBY'S CHELIMO THIRD AT NESCAC MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP MEET

WATERVILLE, Maine -- After missing last year's New England Small College Athletic Conference championship race, Colby College's David Chelimo finished in third place at the men's cross country league meet Saturday at Quarry Road Trails.

Chelimo had a time of 25 minutes, 33.94 seconds over the 8-kilometer course. Tim Nichols of Tufts University won the men's title in 24:58.79 and Jumbo teammate Luke O'Connor placed second in 25:29.80.

Chelimo and the two Tufts runners pulled away early from the pack and were never challenged. James Jones of Bates College finished in fourth place, nearly 30 seconds behind Chelimo. O'Connor and Chelimo were able to stay with Nichols for about half the race, but Nichols steadily pulled away.

While Chelimo will earn All-NESCAC First Team honors for his placing, Colby's Griffin Gagnon will be on the second team when the league office officially releases the teams next week. Gagnon took 13th place in 26:22.53 and appeared strong at the finish.

Colby finished in fifth place with a score of 127, but was just one point away from tying for third place with Middlebury College and Tufts. Williams won its fourth straight NESCAC title with a score of 83 and Amherst College took second with 100.

Benard Kibet finished in the top 30 by placing 30th for the Mules in 26:57.08. Nathan Madeira placed 38th for Colby in 27:04.35 and Noel Feeney took 43rd in 27:0 9.73.

Colby's other runners included: Eli Decker (52nd, 27:18.06), Tom O'Shea (53rd, 27:19.81), Reeve Maddux (76th, 27:52.42), Silas Eastman (80th, 27:59.02), Thomas O'Donnell (85th, 28:05.33), Aziz Ghadiali (92nd, 28:16.44), and Gabe Kline (108th, 28:44.63).

LAWLOR 12TH FOR COLBY WOMEN AT NESCAC MEET

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Caitlin Lawlor finished in 12th place for the Colby College women's cross country team at the Quarry Road Trails on Saturday at the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championships.

Lawlor had a time of 23 minutes, 20.06 seconds over the 6-kilometer course. Lawlor will earn All-NESCAC Second Team honors when the teams are officially announced by the NESCAC next week. Lawlor and the field of 129 finishers had to run in a steady rain after the men's championship race barely had a drizzle less than an hour earlier.

Hannah Springhorn placed 26th for the Mules with a 23:51.49 clocking. She helped the Mules place ninth in the meet with a score of 223.

Mahal Alvarez-Backus led a pack of Mules by finishing in 78th place in 25:20.43. Elizabeth Holland was right behind in 79th (25:21.91), Brit Biddle finished 82nd with a 25:26.08, and Amy LoTemplio took 83rd in 25:29.88.

Sonia Tremblay (93rd, 25:47.82), Helen Chavey (97th, 25:56.89), MJ Kievman (102nd, 26:04.66), Lydia Fanning (105th, 26:14.81), Margo Buys (116th, 26:41.66), and Taylor Kennedy (129th, 28:21.18) were other Colby finishers.

Williams won its second straight league title and a fourth in the last six years with a score of 47.

Middlebury College's Abigail Nadler won the women's race in 22:33.77 and Natalie Bettez took second in 22:52.53.
