COLBY TO HOST NESCAC CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS AT QUARRY ROAD TRIALS ON SATURDAY

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The best of the New England Small College Athletic Conference head to Quarry Road Trails on Saturday when Colby College hosts the cross country league championships.

The men's 8-kilometer race begins at noon and is followed by the women's 6K event at 1 p.m. The awards ceremony is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Williams College won both the men's and women's team championships last year at Wesleyan University. Amherst College had both individual winners in 2015 and both return to defend their championships.

Mohamed Hussein won the men's title for Amherst last year, while Lizzie Lacy became the first first-year runner since 2003 to win the women's championship in their rookie year.

While Williams has won the last three men's titles, Colby finished second at the 2014 league meet. The Mules went on to beat Williams at the New England Division III meet that year.

The Colby men won the Maine State Championships two weeks ago and had last weekend off to prepare for the conference meet. David Chelimo, who missed all of last year with an injury, was second at the state meet and is getting stronger every week. Fellow senior Silas Eastman missed the Maine meet, but is expected to run Saturday.

Benard Kibet, Griffin Gagnon, Tom O'Shea, Tom O'Donnell, Nathan Madeira, Reeve Maddux, Gabe Kline, Aziz Ghadiali, Noel Feeney, and Eli Decker join Chelimo and Eastman to make up the Colby's 12-man team.

The Colby men won NESCAC titles in 1984, 1987, 1990, and 1993. Kelly Dodge won an individual title in 1980 and Rob Edson was a winner for the Mules in 1982.

The Middlebury College women won the NESCAC title in 2013 and 2014 before Williams was a winner last year.

Taylor Kennedy, Hannah Springhorn, and Caitlin Lawlor have been Colby's top female runners this year. The Mules will have one of the youngest teams in the league meet, with 10 of the 12 runners at sophomore standing or younger. Colby has no seniors running and the juniors are Lawlor and Kennedy.

Mahal Alvarez-Backus, Brit Biddle, Margo Buys, Helen Chavey, Lydia Fanning, Elizabeth Holland, MJ Kievman, Amy LoTemplio, and Sonia Tremblay will run Saturday for the Colby women.

The Mules won women's titles in 1986 and 1994. Colby graduate Michelle Severance is one of three runners to win the individual title three times (1990, 1991, 1993). Kara Patterson won championships in 1994 and 1996 for the Mules.
