COLBY FIELD HOCKEY FINISHES SEASON WITH SETBACK

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Colby College field hockey team scored the first goal of the game Wednesday night against Bates College, but the Bobcats had the rest of the offense in a 4-1 win in NESCAC field hockey.

The Mules finish the season at 6-9 overall and 2-8 in the conference. Colby needed a win Wednesday for any chance at a league playoff spot.

Hannah Hearn, from Lewiston's neighboring city of Auburn, scored her fifth goal of the season off an assist from Merrill Read. Hearn played in her final game along with fellow seniors McKayla Blanch, Tori Brown, Caroline Ferguson, and Kaleigh Hoffman.

After Colby's goal at 28:24 of the first half, Bates (9-6 overall, 4-6 NESCAC) scored twice in the final 2:20 of the half to take the lead for good. Jessie Moriarty scored her eighth goal at 32:40 off a pass from Taylor Lough, who then scored the game-winning goal with just 22 seconds left in the half.

Lough added a big insurance goal for a 3-1 margin at 43:42 of the contest. With Colby pressing for goals, Bates' Shelbie McCormack tallied with just 1:01 remaining.

Riley Whitmyer made four saves in the first half and Emily Buckman stopped two shots in the final 35 minutes for the Mules. Kat Restrepo made her fifth defensive save of the year.

Adelae Durand made four saves and Delaney Nalen had a defensive save for Bates.

Colby had a 6-4 edge in penalty corners, but the Bobcats had an 18-6 margin in shots.
