COLBY FIELD HOCKEY PULLS AWAY FROM UMF

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Hannah Hearn (Auburn, Maine) scored a pair of goals and added an assist to lift the Colby College field hockey team to a 6-0 win over University of Maine at Farmington in non-conference play Wednesday night at Bill Alfond Field.

Meredith Keenan (Sherman, Conn.) had one goal and one assist for the Mules (6-7 overall). Danielle Smith (Salem, N.H.), Merrill Read (Milwaukee, Wis.), and McKayla Blanch (Tewksbury, Mass.) also tallied.

The Mules only led 1-0 at halftime, despite a 15-1 margin in shots. Colby had a 28-5 shot advantage for the game and a 13-4 edge in penalty corners.

Smith put the Mules up 1-0 at 12:54 of the first half when she tracked down a cross from Hearn on the right side of the cage.

Hearn scored two goals in a span of 35 seconds to help the Mules pull away. Her first goal at 41:45 of the contest came on a direct path to the goal, using her speed off her stick-work to create space and hit a low shot into the left corner. The second goal was at 42:20 off a pass from Keenan on a play started by a penalty corner from Hearn, who has four goals and five assists.

Keenan made it 4-0 and scored her fifth goal of the season on a blast to the left corner. Read followed up at 62:05 with her seventh goal on a shot from in front. Blanch also had her seventh goal on a long blast from just inside the circle.

Riley Whitmyer (Bentleyville, Ohio) had one save for her first collegiate shutout. Patty Smith (Gorham, Maine) had seven of her nine saves in the opening half for UMF.

Kat Retstrepo (Columbus, Ohio) had a defensive save for Colby, while Torrie Nightingale (Bangor, Maine) made a defensive stop for the Beavers.

COLBY FIELD HOCKEY DROPS FINAL HOME GAME TO HAMILTON

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Meredith Keenan scored for the Colby College field hockey team, but Hamilton College remained hot with a 4-1 NESCAC victory Saturday at Bill Alfond Field.

Hamilton scored twice in each half to win for the 10th time this season. The Continentals (10-4 overall, 7-3 NESCAC) came into the game as one of the hottest teams in the country. Hamilton has knocked off Bowdoin, Middlebury, and Amherst.

Colby is still alive for the eighth and final NESCAC playoff spot. The Mules (6-8, 2-7 NESCAC) play at Bates College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Bobcats are 3-6 in the league and Connecticut College is 2-7. If the Mules beat Bates and Connecticut College defeats Wesleyan, there would be a three-way tie at 3-7 for the final spot.

The Continentals led 2-0 at halftime and both goals came in the opening 20 minutes. Michaela Giuttari scored at 8:27 when she stuffed in her own rebound after goalkeeper Riley Whitmyer made a nice stop. The play started off a long pass from Lizzie Clarke.

Giuttari had some nice stick work on the second goal as she pushed past a Colby defender in the area and found Tatiana Bradley near the right post for the one-timer goal.

Emma Anderson made it 3-0 at 59:05 in the second half. After taking a penalty corner, Anderson stepped back out on the field and tipped in a shot by Lizzie Clarke.

Anderson then had an assist on Hamilton's fourth goal by Margaret Revera on another penalty corner at 63:34. Anderson pushed the pass to Revera on the near side and she smacked a long shot for the score.

Keenan scored the lone goal for Colby with 5:39 to play. Hamilton failed to clear a ball and Keenan ripped a shot from just inside the circle.

Julia Booth stopped six shots for the Continentals, while Riley Whitmyer made 18 saves. Hamilton had a 33-16 margin in shots and a 13-5 edge in penalty corners.
