COLBY FOOTBALL COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AGAINST BOBCATS

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Colby College football team had two long field goals from John Baron and nearly came all the way back from a 21-3 deficit before falling just short in a 21-19 loss to Bates College on Saturday at Garcelon Field.

The Mules and the Bobcats are both 2-4 on the season. Bates, however, can win the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) title with a win at Bowdoin next Saturday. Colby plays at Tufts University on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Colby has now lost three straight games to Bates in heartbreaking ways. After taking a 21-3 win over Bates in 2013, the Mules fell 10-9 last year at home, despite holding Bates to just 168 yards of total offense. The Bobcats scored their lone touchdown of the game on an interception return. The 2014 game may have been a tougher loss, with the Mules falling 34-28 in overtime. Colby had leads of 14-0 and 21-7 before Bates came back.

The Mules were the team with the comeback in this year's game. The Bobcats took a 21-3 lead into halftime before Colby's defense held Bates without a point in the second half.

Sebastian Ferrell continues to perform at a high level for the Mules. He had 11 catches for 183 yards (16.6 per catch) and scored two touchdowns.

Christian Sparacio (pictured) threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Ferrell to give the Mules some momentum and cut the margin to 21-10 with 1:07 left in the third quarter. Sparacio completed a 21-yard pass to Alex Kramer on the first play of the drive and then connected with Ferrell.

On their next drive, the Mules added three more points on a 36-yard field goal by John Baron to get Colby within one score of tying the game with nine minutes to play.

Sparacio stayed red-hot on the drive with three straight completions of 20, 4, and 11 yards to Matt Richman. Sparacio also had a pass of 21 yards to Braden Wilson.

Colby started its final scoring drive with 5:59 left in the fourth quarter and converted two third downs on the drive of 80 yards in nine plays. Ferrell caught a 23-yard pass on a 3rd-and-6 and then added a 36-yard catch that went to Bates' 5-yard line. After Ferrell drew a pass interference penalty to put the ball at the Bates 2-yard line, Sparacio hit him on a 2-yard scoring pass to make it 21-19 with 2:34 to play. Colby's pass attempt on a two-point conversion failed.

The Mules forced a three-and-out on the ensuing possession by the Bobcats and used two timeouts to stop the clock.

Colby took over on Bates' 48-yard line after Ferrell returned the punt 11 yards. The Mules got a first down at the 36-yard line on a 9-yard catch from Ferrell, but the Mules could only muster 3 yards on the next four plays to turn the ball over on downs.

Sparacio, who entered the game at halftime, was 20-for-31 for 255 yards and the two scoring passes.

Justin Lamere led Colby's defense with 15 tackles, while Ian Dickey had six tackles and one interception. Bryan McAdams finished with 10 tackles.

Baron booted a 43-yard field goal to give Colby a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. The kick was the longest of his career.

Frank Williams had a 1-yard rushing touchdown and caught a 24-yard pass from Sandy Plashkes for another score. Peter Boyer had the other touchdown on a 1-yard scoring run with 3:49 left to halftime.

John Smith Appreciates Husson O-Line

The Husson football team won again this weekend and remains unbeaten in conference play.

Running back John Smith was amazing again.

He’s been averaging more than 160 yards per game on the ground for three years.

He’s thankful for the guys up front on the line.

Husson Football Controls Destiny for NCAA’s, but They Have to win out to get in

Husson football has to keep winning. The last two teams they play are sitting right behind the Eagles…. Norwich and Mt. Ida each have one loss in the conference.

Tomorrow Husson plays Norwich…. The team that beat them last year to go to the NCAA tournament
