Football: Bates looking for first win in home opener

Bates football preview

Outlook: The Bobcats are vying for their third consecutive Colby-Bates-Bowdoin title while hoping to move up in the NESCAC standings. They have solid veterans at virtually every position except quarterback. The defense should be their strength. Upton and Williams are all-NESCAC defenders playing behind a big front in the 3-5-3 led by Richardson. Harriman expects offensive coordinator Skip Capone's triple-option offense to be a little less run-oriented this year with Plashkes, who took a few snaps but didn't attempt a pass last year, getting the starting nod over two freshmen. Boyer, from Dover-Foxcroft, earned the starting "dive" back job after a strong preseason, but Janssen and Spillane will get to hammer the rock, too. With Mark Riley's graduation, there isn't a known deep threat, but Harriman believes Stebbins, from Biddeford, Ross and Daly are a deeper group than last year's. The O-line has the only two seniors on that side of the ball, and Harriman expects the veteran unit to impose its will more at the line of scrimmage this year. The Bobcats start with two early road tests against Trinity and Tufts before the home-opener Oct. 8 vs. Williams. If they are balanced as they think they can be, a good start could propel them to their first winning record since 2012.

Bobcats bring EL alum Emerson home to start college coaching career

Nevertheless, the Edward Little High School graduate had an inkling he'd still have some dues to pay if he wanted to continue coaching. So he wasn't disappointed when he asked new UMaine football coach Joe Harasymiak for advice on how to get started in the college ranks.

"He talked to me about getting an entry-level job where the money's not great and the hours stink, but everyone's done it," Emerson said. "You're putting in your time."

This fall, the 23-year-old Emerson is more than just putting in his time as part of the Bates College football coaching staff. He's taking everything in that he can.

Bowdoin set to open 125th football season

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College football team will open its 125th season on Saturday when they travel to Vermont to battle Middlebury College.

The Polar Bears are entering their second season under head coach JB Wells, who steered the team to a 2-6 record in his first year at Bowdoin, tied for sixth in the NESCAC. Husson football team shuts out Alfred State; MMA falls to MIT

BANGOR, Maine — Obie Christmas rushed for two touchdowns and John Smith compiled 153 yards on the ground as Husson University used a balanced attack to defeat Alfred State 35-0 at the Winkin Complex on Saturday.

The 2-1 Eagles raced out to a 28-0 lead at halftime and did not look back.

Quarterback Cory Brandon, who amassed 176 yards through the air, opened the scoring for coach Gabby Price’s club with a 1-yard touchdown plunge.

Brandon’s first touchdown pass, a 45-yarder to Robenson Saintard, came on the Eagles’ following possession.

Middlebury too much for Colby
Quarterback Jared Lebowitz throws for 320 yards and five touchdowns in 35-14 win over Mules

WATERVILLE — It took the Middlebury College offense almost a quarter to get rolling on Saturday afternoon, but once it did, it was almost impossible to stop.
Led by junior quarterback Jared Lebowitz, a transfer from UNLV, the Panthers piled up 429 yards of offense at Seaverns Field, taking a 35-14 win over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play. Middlebury improved to 2-0, while Colby is 1-1.
