Husson running back on record-setting pace as team aims for NCAA tourney

BANGOR, Maine — John Smith suffered a severe injury late in his high school football career at Starr’s Mill High School in Fayetteville, Georgia.

He broke his femur, which is the thighbone.

“That took me off a lot of recruiting boards,” he said.

Husson University in Bangor did not eliminate him from its recruiting board.

Husson picked to win ECFC football championship

...This year’s Husson team will be quarterbacked by sophomore Cody Brandon, who appeared in nine games last year as a backup to the graduated Joe Seccareccia and completed 31-of-56 passes.

Reigning ECFC Offensive Player of the Year John Smith, who rushed for 1,733 yards in 2015, will headline the offense. The top five receivers, including All-ECFC first-teamer Deon Wiggins and second-teamer Robenson Saintard, and 10 offensive linemen with at least two years of experience also return.

Nine of the top 12 tacklers are back on defense including linebacker and top tackler Ellis Throckmorton, sacks leader Luke Washburn and cornerback Marquis Jiminez, all All-ECFC second-team picks. Senior Logan Steward of Hampden has returned to rover back where he played in 604 of 612 plays as a freshman before switching to running back the past two years.

Husson opens its season at Alfred (New York) on Sept. 3.

BOSTON — With Division III football in New England continuing to grow and develop, the commissioners of four conferences in the region have decided to provide teams with some added postseason incentive.

Officials from the the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference, the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, the New England Football Conference/Commonwealth Coast Conference and the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference have established the New England Bowl.

The contest, which will feature the two top teams from those leagues that were not selected for inclusion in the NCAA Division III Football Championship, will be played on Saturday, Nov. 19.

New England Bowl a new Postseason Opportunity for D-III Football Teams

Four division three football conferences in New England have come together and provide two teams to play in the “New England Bowl” at the end of the season.

The ECFC and the NEFC are part of the plan…. Those leagues include Husson and Maine Maritime Academy.

The teams for the bowl game will be chosen after the 32 team NCAA field is set.

Junior’s four touchdowns help power Husson past Dean College

BANGOR, Maine — Whenever the Husson University football team needed a big play against the Dean College club Friday night, it was John Smith who gave it to them.

The junior tailback from Fayetteville, Georgia, tallied 280 yards on 39 carries and four touchdowns as the Eagles triumphed in their home opener, 43-23, at the Winkin Complex.

Husson improved to 1-1, and Dean College slipped to 0-2

Coach Gabby Price’s club raced out to a 20-0 lead only to have the Bulldogs fight back in the second half, getting as close as 30-23 on a 49-yard touchdown pass from David Curry to Sharif Harris.
