COLBY'S VIVIAN NAMED NESCAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College free safety Don Vivian (Slingerlands, N.Y.), who had a collegiate-high 14 tackles Saturday, was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Football Defensive Player of the Week on Sunday.

Vivian added 1.5 tackles for loss, a fourth quarter interception, and a key blocked field goal in the Mules' 32-16 win against rival Bowdoin College on Saturday.

The Mules were leading 13-3 in the third quarter when Vivian blocked a 44-yard field goal attempt. The block was key at the time because Bowdoin cut the lead to 13-10 later in the quarter.

After Colby took a 29-10 lead in the fourth quarter, Vivian intercepted a pass and rambled 29 yards down the right sideline to the Bowdoin 12-yard line with 5:13 to play.

Despite being a defensive back, Vivian had 12 of his 14 tackles on Bowdoin running plays. With Colby leading 16-10 early in the fourth quarter, Vivian had a solo tackle on a 6-yard loss for Bowdoin on a running play. The Polar Bears ended up punting on 4th-and-2 and Colby scored on the next drive to start pulling away.

Vivian led the Mules in tackles this season with 63 (38 solo), had two interceptions, five pass break-ups, three tackles for loss, and one forced fumble..

The sophomore defensive back has 74 tackles in his first two years with the Mules, who finished 3-5 overall.

Playoff-bound Husson football team has exceeded expectations

“We were better than good. I didn’t realize were going to be this good,” said Price, whose Eagles won nine straight games after a season-opening 35-28 loss at Alfred to notch their second Eastern Collegiate Football Conference championship in three years.

Husson travels to Springfield, Massachusetts, on Saturday for an NCAA Division III playoff game against 10-0 Western New England University, the nation’s 23rd-ranked team.
