COLBY: MEN'S SOCCER ENDS SEASON WITH WIN OVER BATES

LEWISTON, Maine -- Kyle Douglas and his Colby College teammates had a number of fine chances to score before Douglas broke a scoreless tie for a 1-0 win at Bates College in NESCAC men's soccer.

The Mules finished the season at 5-8-2 overall and 2-6-2 in the NESCAC. The Bobcats dropped behind Colby in the final league standings at 6-7-2 overall and 2-7-1 in the league. The Mules are 2-0-1 against the Bobcats in the last three years.

The game saw both teams achieve and narrowly miss on several scoring opportunities in both periods.

In the 81st minute, Colby sophomore Jansen Aoyama centered a pass from the left side towards the top of the Bates penalty area. Douglas beat a Bates defender to the ball with no one else in the vicinity, and he got his right foot on the ball enough to poke it past the reach of Bates goalie Robbie Montanaro to put the Mules in the lead. The goal was Douglas's team-high third of the season, and the assist was Aoyama's first.

The Mules had three fine scoring chances over a span of about 12 minutes before the winning goal. Douglas was stopped with about 22 minutes remaining when goalkeeper Robbie Montanaro made a save that was cleared by a defender just past the post. David Howarth hit the crossbar on a blast with 13:51 to play, while Cam Clouse had a header go barely over the bar and land on the back of the net 43 seconds before the goal.

The scoreless first half was unusual, with Colby attempting a whopping eight corner kicks and just one shot on goal.

Colby goalkeeper Stanley Clarke made five of his nine saves in the opening half. He finished the season at 3-0 and had a .933 save percentage.

One of Clarke's saves stood out as Bates' best threat to score. In the 21st minute, first-year Eric Opoku made a one-on-one move to shake loose a defender on the top left corner of the Colby penalty area. Opoku's hard, low shot seemed destined to tuck inside the near post, but the 6-foot-3 Clarke dove to bat the ball away. In the 27th minute, Clarke stoned senior Peabo Knoth from close range as Knoth fired from a tight angle.

Bates sophomore goalie Robbie Montanaro's lone save in the first half came in the 39th minute, turning away Richie Gutierrez's header on a corner kick by David Howarth. Colby's best threat in the first half came in the 12th minute, when Jansen Aoyama's shot from the left side of the box caromed off the crossbar.

With under eight minutes to go, Bates' Nate Merchant was able to turn and strike a hard shot that Clarke was in position for the save. Merchant shot high again with under three minutes left.
