COLBY: MEN'S RUGBY TEAM ADVANCES TO NATIONAL TOURNEY

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The Colby College men's rugby 7s team won five matches in the Northeast Qualifier Tournament to advance to the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) National Championship.

The Mules had wins over University of Rhode Island (33-12), Hobart College (42-0), host Plattsburgh State (21-5), University of Maine (30-7), and the championship game victory over Babson College (22-20).

Nathan Huebschmann led the team in tries on the day (6) and co-captain Jack Sears earned tournament MVP honors.

The tournament began with a win over Rhode Island. An early interception by Lucas Graham set up the Mules first try. Aidan Cyr, a first-year in his first rugby match, scored the first time he touched the ball. Scores also came from Huebschmann (1), Eric Alimanestianu (1), and co-captain Quill Yates (2).

The second game was a rout of Hobart College where Cyr had a hat trick, scoring three tries in his second collegiate match.

The Mules then spread the ball around in their wins against Plattsburgh and UMO with tries coming from Huebschmann, Yates, JC Magnotto, and Sam Swain. Alimanestianu led the team's stellar defense with some key tackles.

Hueschmann had a huge championship game, scoring three tries, two off Swain assists. Graham seized an opportunity for a try in the second half, leaping on a Babson errant pass in the try zone.

Sears converted most of the team's tries throughout the tournament, including the difference-maker against Babson. He also made the biggest play of the tournament. After kicking the ball off to Babson, he forced a turnover off a tackle and passed to Huebschmann for the eventual game-winning try.

Duke University, Solano Community College, Christendom College, New Mexico Highland University, St. Mary's College of Maryland, and two other teams who have yet to be determined will also play in the national championship. The tournament will be played at Talen Energy Park in Chester, Pa., on June 3-4.
