UMPI: Young Owls baseball team starting to get the hang of things

PRESQUE ISLE, Me (WAGM) - It's the middle of March and the UMPI baseball team has already played nearly half of it's schedule. The Owls only have one win so far, but are a very young team with no seniors. The first 10 game road trip was a good learning experience for the young players.

COLBY: BARON, WARD PITCH COLBY BASEBALL TO SPLIT

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- John Baron pitched five strong innings to earn the win and Jackson Ward was dominating in relief to lead the Colby College baseball team to a 3-1 win over St. Joseph's College Long Island on Wednesday in Florida.

St. Joseph's (6-4 overall) held on for a 7-6 win over the Mules in the nightcap.

Baron allowed just four hits, struck out three, and walked four to earn his first collegiate victory. Ward pitched the final two innings, struck out six, and did not allow a hit or walk in recording his first collegiate save.

Colby (3-4) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Ryan Quinn doubled to right field and then scored on Andrew Della Volpe's double. Keenan Iuliano singled to left field to bring in Della Volpe, who is second on the team in batting average at .471. Quinn is hitting .429 and Iuliano is at .400 on the young season.

After the Golden Eagles scored their lone run in the fourth, the Mules added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Jackson Ward, who is leading the Mules in batting average (.500), singled up the middle to lead off. Two straight ground outs put Ward to third base and Tyler Mulberry singled up the middle to bring Ward in for the final run.

Ward finished with two of Colby's six hits in the opener and the Mules left only three runners on base. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles left 11 runners stranded.

St. Joseph's scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning of the second game, but the Mules came back with two runs in the second, two more in the third, and a lone run in the fourth for a 5-3 lead. The Golden Eagles went ahead for good with four runs in the fourth inning.

Ryder Arsenault, hitting .385 this season, had three hits and a stolen base for Colby. Iuliano, Quinn, and Mulberry all had two hits. Matt Mitchell went 1-for-1 and walked three times, while Ward and Della Volpe both had one hit and one run.

Quinn had a one-out single to center field in the second inning and advanced to third when Iuliano doubled. George Schmidt hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Quinn, while Mitchell doubled to left to bring in Iuliano.

The Mules went up 4-3 in the third inning when Matt Garcia was hit by a pitch with two outs. Mulberry singled and Quinn walked to load the bases. Iuliano's single to center field brought in Garcia and Mulberry.

In the Colby fourth, Mitchell walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a ground out. Ward followed with a single to center field to score the Mules' fifth run.

Quinn cut the St. Joseph's lead to 7-6 in the fifth inning. He had a bunt single, moved to second on a wild pitch, and took third on a long fly out. Della Volpe tripled to right to bring Quinn in for the final run.

Andrew Sterup had Colby's best pitching performance, going 1.2 innings without allowing a run and striking out one.
