Husson to face top-ranked Castleton in NAC baseball opener

.. Castleton reduced its NCAA Division III-leading team earned run average to 1.89 with the sweep. Webster College of Saint Louis, Missouri, ranks second at 2.65.

“Obviously we lost four times to Castleton but we lost three, one-run games,” said Harvey. “It wasn’t a matter of us not being in the games, we had an opportunity in a couple of the games to score a run or push across a couple of runs but just didn’t come up with the key hit.”

“Anytime you get into a conference tournament you’ve got to beat everybody at some point … so we’ll be ready to go.”

Husson’s tournament seeding wasn’t determined until Wednesday evening after New England College of Henniker, New Hampshire, outlasted Colby-Sawyer of New London, New Hampshire, 5-4 in 12 innings.

COLBY: ARSENAULT GETS 100TH CAREER HIT FOR BASEBALL IN LOSSES

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College's Ryder Arsenault had his 100th career hit and closed out his career with 102 hits in just three years in losses to Amherst College on Saturday.

Arsenault went 0-for-3 in the first game, but had three hits in the nightcap. He missed his entire junior season with an injury.

Drew Fischer and Sam Schneider combined on a 3-0 shutout in the first game for the Mammoths and the team scored four runs in the final two innings of the nightcap to pull out an 8-4 win over the Mules.

The Mammoths improve to 19-14 overall and will be back to Waterville for next weekend's NESCAC Baseball Championships at Colby. Colby ends the season at 10-25-1.

Fischer pitched the first four innings to earn the victory and Schneider earned the save.

Colby's Brooks Parker allowed just four hits over 6.2 innings of the seven inning opener. He allowed no earned runs, struck out four, and walked one.

Amherst scored three unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning after Harry Roberson got on by an infield error. Yanni Thanopoulos followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Anthony Spina had a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in the first run and move Thanopoulos to third. After Amherst had a second out, Severino Tocci walked and immediately stole second base. Chase Henley followed with a two-run single for the final runs.

Ben Coleman singled and walked twice in the first game for the Mules. He finished the season with a .396 batting average.

Colby led 3-2 in the second game after four innings, but Amherst scored two in the fifth, three more in the eighth, and one in the ninth. Colby had its other run in the sixth inning.

Ariel Kenney doubled twice and was on base three times for the Mammoths. Roberson had a double among his two hits and scored two runs. Thanopoulos also doubled and had two hits. Spina smacked a triple and scored twice.

Ryder Arsenault, one of five Colby seniors playing their final games, had a double among his three hits. Coleman added two hits and a walk for the Mules in the second game. Grant Lowensohn, another senior, also had two hits.

The Mammoths scored twice in the first inning on a one-out single by Roberson to get things going. With two outs, Spina struck out but reached on a wild pitch and advanced to second. Kenney reached on an infield error and both runs came in for Amherst.

The Mules tied the game with two runs in the second inning. Tyler Mulberry led off with a single and William Wessman reached on an infield error. Lowensohn singled to bring in Mulberry and George Schmidt followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Wessman.

The Mules went ahead 3-2 with a lone run in the fourth inning. Lowensohn and Schmidt had back-to-back one-out singles. After the second out, Coleman brought Lowensohn home with an RBI single.

Amherst bounced back with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Thanopoulos had a two-out double and came home on a triple by Spina, who scored on a throwing error for the other run.

In the Colby sixth inning, Noah Tocci walked to start the inning, moved to second on a ground out, and scored when Conor Bruen singled and Amherst had an error.

The Mammoths took the lead for good in the eighth inning. Ryan Hardin singled and stole second to lead off the inning. After an out, Kenney doubled to bring home the eventual game-winning run. Will Murphy later had a sacrifice fly to bring in the second run and Sam Ellinwood had an RBI single.

Roberson doubled to lead off the ninth and took third on a sacrifice. Spina's sacrifice fly to center field scored the final run.

Sophomore pitcher Andrew Ferrero earned the victory with 1.2 innings of relief work. The Mammoths used five pitchers in the game.
