Huston’s versatility a source of stability behind the plate for Husson

BANGOR, Maine — Sam Huston is the picture of stability for the Husson University baseball team.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound sophomore anchors the Eagles’ defense as their starting catcher and leads the offense while hitting a team-leading .317 with three home runs, 12 doubles and 33 RBI.

It’s stability based on versatility. While Huston has played primarily at catcher in his two seasons at Husson, a high school and American Legion baseball career that included back-to-back state championships at each level and an appearance in the 2013 Senior League World Series has seen Huston contribute from every corner position on the field.

COLBY'S COLEMAN HAS FOUR HITS IN LOSS AT UMAINE

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Ben Coleman had four hits to raise his average to .396 for the Colby College baseball team in a 10-2 loss to University of Maine at Mahaney Diamond on Wednesday.

The Mules (10-23-1 overall) will close out the season Saturday with a noon doubleheader at home against Amherst College. University of Maine, a Division I school, moved to 16-23.

The Mules did have nine hits, two walks, and a hit batter in the game. However, Colby left 11 runners on base.

Coleman, leading off for the Mules, continues to make contact. He is the only player on the team with more walks (team-best 10) than strikeouts. Coleman also stole a base to push his team lead to 12 and scored his 12th run of the season.

Colby pitching only gave up four earned runs in the game. The Black Bears scored all 10 of their runs in the first three innings. Taimu Ito, Will Cohen, and John Barron combined to pitch the final five innings and held UMaine scoreless. Ito threw the fourth inning, Cohen had one strikeout and one walk in two innings, and Baron did not allow a hit while striking out one and walking two in the final two innings.

Ryder Arsenault had one hit, one walk, and drove in a run for the Mules. Grant Lowensohn, Keenan Iuliano, William Wessman, and Jackson Ward had the other Colby hits.

Lou Della Fera had three hits and scored a run for the Black Bears. Jonathan Bennett added two hits and drove in three runs, while Caleb Kerbs had a triple among his two hits.

After the Black Bears scored two unearned runs in the first inning, Colby cut the lead in half in the top of the second. Noah Paredes had a one-out walk, moved to second when Matt Mitchell was hit by a pitch, and both runners advanced when Coleman had an infield single. All three runners advanced on a passed ball to plate Paredes.

UMaine scored five runs in the second inning, but only one was earned. The Black Bears scored three more runs in the third inning, two coming in on a Bennett single.

The Mules scored the final run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Coleman had a two-out single and came all the way around to score on Arsenault's double.
