COLBY: WOMEN'S LACROSSE PLAYS WELL IN TOUGH OT LOSS TO NO. 3 TRINITY

WATERVILLE, Maine --- The 20th-ranked Colby College women's lacrosse team scored twice in the final 11:17 of regulation to send the game to overtime in a tough 8-7 setback to third-ranked Trinity College on Friday at Bill Alfond Field.

Abby McInerney scored with 28 seconds left in overtime and goaltender Zoe Ferguson stopped 14 shots for the Bantams.

After battling to a 3-3 halftime tie, Colby (1-2 overall, 0-2 NESCAC) scored the opening two goals of the second half. Kendall Smith scored from Lexie Perticone just 36 seconds into the half. Smith then had an assist on a goal by Sasha Fritts just 30 seconds later.

Trinity, winners of five of the last six NESCAC titles, settled down and scored four straight goals to go up 7-5. Kiley Coffey scored from Georgia Mergner with 27:20 left in regulation and then tallied again unassisted with 21:53 remaining to tie the contest at 5-5.

The Bantams' Karly Simpson scored on a free-position shot with 18:11 remaining in the second half to break the tie. Trinity went up by two goals when Mergner scored from Nicole Stauffer with 16:38 left.

Colby held Trinity (3-0, 2-0 NESCAC) without a goal for the rest of regulation and scored twice to knot the game up. Gemma Bready scored off a free-position shot with 11:17 to play and Fritts tied the game at 7-7 with her third goal of the game off a pass from Perticone with 4:58 to go.

Ferguson stopped a free-position shot in overtime and Colby goaltender Izzy Scribano (4 saves) stopped a point-blank shot from in front right before the teams switched sides after three minutes of play.

Trinity did a nice job of spreading the field and passing on the overtime goal. The movement and space was enough for McInerney to get wide open in front to take the pass from Simpson.

The Mules held a 24-15 lead in shots. Colby scored on 2-of-10 free-position shots and Trinity converted one of their three chances.
