COLBY WOMEN'S LACROSSE OPENER PUSHED BACK TO SUNDAY

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The 18th-ranked Colby College women's lacrosse team will have to wait a day for the season opener after Saturday's scheduled game with Hamilton College was moved to Sunday at noon on Bill Alfond Field.

Saturday's forecast called for a brutal cold temperature of 12 degrees and a wind of nearly 25 miles per hour. Sunday's temperature is still cold at 30 degrees, but the sun will be out and winds will be minimal.

Hamilton is ranked 16th in the country. The game will be webcast at http://www.nsnsports.net/colleges/colby/

COLBY: WOMEN'S LACROSSE SET TO START SEASON AT HOME SUNDAY

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College women's lacrosse team opens the 2017 season Sunday after a season without a trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament, despite going 12-4 overall, 8-2 in away and neutral site games, and posting a 7-3 conference record.

The 18th-ranked Mules play host to 16th-ranked Hamilton College at noon on Bill Alfond Field. The two teams were scheduled to play Saturday, but the game was pushed back a day because of a cold weather forecast.

Colby, under 10th-year head coach Karen Henning, returns seven of its top nine scorers from last year and both goaltenders. The Mules lost the most on defense, losing two starters to graduation.

Colby's three senior captains -- Emilie Klein (North Andover, Mass.), Georgia Lubrano (Hanover, N.H.), and Lexie Perticone (Darien, Conn.) -- all play in different parts of the field. Klein plays in the midfield, Lubrano is part of the defense, and Perticone is an attacker.

Perticone (20 goals, 17 assists) was tied for first with junior Kendall Smith (Bloomfield, N.J., 21 goals, 16 assists) for the team lead in scoring with 37 points. Smith has 41 goals and 67 points in her first two years.

Junior Sasha Fritts (Darien, Conn.), an All-Region selection as a first-year, is back after scoring 13 goals and dishing six assists in 13 games. Senior Cassie Rodgers (Marblehead, Mass.) missed the season last year due to injury, but started all 16 games two years ago. Sophomores McGara DeWan (Glen Rock, N.J., 8 goals, 2 assists) and Bridget Horwood (Scarsdale, N.Y., 4 goals, 4 assists) return along with Hannah Newhall (Cape Elizabeth, Maine). Sophomore newcomer Banks Dotson (Houston, Texas) and first-year Emma Banks (North Haven, Conn.) also will be attackers.

Klein will be a key player in the center of the midfield with her all-around play. She had 10 goals, two assists, 23 caused turnovers, 20 ground balls, and 17 draw controls. Klein leads a midfield with a nice mix of experience and younger players.

Juniors Kelsey Bowen (Braintree, Mass., 10 goals, 2 assists) and Madeleine Hatch (Wilbraham, Mass., 5 goals, 3 assists) return in the midfield along with seniors Gemma Bready (Newbury, N.H., 7 goals, 2 assists), Chrissy Coveney (Hingham, Mass., 8 goals), and Celeste Murtha (Natick, Mass.). Sophomore Kate Burkett (Larchmont, N.Y., 2 goals, 2 assists) also is back.

First-years Grace Crowell (Medfield, Mass.), Melinda Edie (Dedham, Mass.), Caroline Fowler (Bethesda, Md.), Kelsey Otley (Cumberland Center, Maine), and Julia Maser (Monmouth Junction, N.J.) bring depth and talent to the midfield.

Colby lost All-NESCAC defender Emma Marjollet and four-year starter Brittany Chin to graduation. However, All-American Jackie Brokaw (Darien, Conn.) and Lubrano return. Brokaw was an Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Second Team All-American and was on the All-NESCAC First Team after accumulating 23 caused turnovers and 25 ground balls. Lubrano added 13 caused turnovers and 14 ground balls.

Junior Rebecca Moore (Concord, Mass.) had seven starts last year on defense. The Mules are short on depth with sophomore defenders Katherine King (Norwell, Mass.) and Kelly Gibney (Ridgewood, N.J.) both out for the season with injuries. First-years Charlie Gomprecht (Owing Mills, Md.), Kayla Luparello (Bedford Hills, N.Y.), and Kristin Yorke (Rumson, N.J.) will be in the mix.

Sophomore goaltender Izzy Scribano (Darien, Conn.) and junior Sam Burch (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) will both see time in goal. Scribano had 12 starts last year and posted an 8-3 record, while Burch was 3-1.

Henning will have second-year assistant coach Renee Olsen (Trinity '15) and first-year Rebecca Lampson (RIT '12) on the coaching staff
