WATERVILLE, Maine -- The National Fastpitch Coaches Association honored eight Colby College softball players in being named to the Easton Scholar-Athlete Team for the 2016 season.

Emma Berger '17 (Newtonville, Mass.), Emily Dougherty '19 (Dover, Mass.), Grace Farnkoff '17 (Scarborough, Maine), Paige Hartnett '19 (Andover, Mass.), Holly Lallis '19 (Gladstone, N.J.), Katie McLaughlin '17 (Glenburn, Maine), Sam Rizzo '19 (Swampscott, Mass.), and Katherine Zafirson '16 (Saco, Maine) earned the honor.

These honors are given in recognition of the academic prowess of softball teams across seven membership divisions and to student-athletes who earned a 3.5 grade point average or higher.

Berger, a chemistry major, played in 21 games for the Mules last season in the outfield. She totaled nine hits, three runs, three doubles, five RBI and two walks.

McLaughlin not only excels academically in her educational studies coursework, she was an offensive leader last season for the Mules. She led the team in runs (22), hits (31), triples (2) and home runs (3).

Farnkoff, a mathematical sciences major, played in 28 games for the Mules. She finished the year with 20 hits, 10 runs, eight RBI and a .976 fielding percentage.

Zafirson saw time at catcher and also had some pinch-hitting opportunities.

Hartnett, Rizzo, Lallis, and Dougherty each earned the honor in their first year playing for the Mules.

Hartnett, an economics major, was second on the Mules in RBI (17) and added three home runs and a .429 slugging percentage. Rizzo, a biology major, had eight hits, three RBI, two doubles, and two walks. Lallis, with a double major in English and government, had a 3-2 record, a team-best 2.30 earned run average, and 13 appearances (2 starts).
