College softball: Thomas holds on to nip Colby
Korrie Laren's homer the difference for Terriers.

WATERVILLE — When Korrie Laren hit her home run to lead off the top of the fourth inning, Thomas College’s senior first baseman didn’t think it would hold up as the only run of the game.

“I thought we were going to hit more,” Laren said, “but we held strong.”

The Terriers didn’t score more, but thanks to strong defense and the pitching of sophomore Sydney LeBourveau, they didn’t have to. Laren’s blast held up, and gave Thomas a 1-0 win over its crosstown rival Colby College on Thursday afternoon.

It was the first game back after a Florida trip for both teams. Thomas is now 3-12, while Colby is 4-7.

COLBY SOFTBALL FALLS, WILL PLAY HUSSON FRIDAY AT HOME

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College pitcher Julia Saul worked 6.1 innings and did not allow a walk in a tough 1-0 loss to Thomas College in non-conference softball Thursday at the Colby Baseball/Softball Complex.

Sydney LeBourveau pitched a three-hit shutout and Korrie Laren had all the offense with a home run in the fourth inning for the Terriers.

Colby drops to 4-7 overall and will host Husson University in a doubleheader Friday starting at 3 p.m. Thomas improved to 3-12 in its first game in Maine after playing 14 contests in Florida.

LeBourveau has all three wins for the Terriers after striking out three and walking three.

Julia Saul took the tough loss for the Mules, going 6.1 innings and striking out one and walking none. Wiley Holton got the final two outs of the seventh for Colby.

After neither team could muster much hitting in the first three innings, Laren opened up the fourth inning with her home run.

Madison Bentz went 2-for-2 for the Terriers, while Courtney Veilleux, Lexi Colpack, and Kayla Bess all had singles.

Skylar Labbe had two of Colby's three hits and Ella Hommeyer had a single. With two outs in the sixth inning, Labbe kept the inning going with a double. Hommeyer followed with her hit, but Labbe was thrown out at home plate for the final out of the inning.

The Mules did get one runner on base in the seventh. Kathleen Mason walked and moved to second on a ground out by Carly Swartz. LeBourveau, though, got the final out on a strikeout.

COLBY, HUSSON SOFTBALL TEAMS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College softball team scored six runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take the lead and then held on for a 6-5 win over Husson University in the opening game of a doubleheader Friday at the Colby Softball Complex.

Husson got a complete game shutout from Alannah Healy for a 7-0 win in the second game.

Colby (5-8) trailed 3-0 before scoring runs in the top of the fifth inning. Wiley Holton led off with a double and was pinch-ran for by Lucie Cunningham. After a ground out pushed Cunningham to third base, Carly Swartz used her speed to get on base with an infield single. Katie McLaughlin followed and ripped a shot into right center field to score both runs.

The Mules went ahead 4-3 when McLaughlin moved to third on a passed ball. Robin Spofford had an infield single and promptly stole second base. Grace Farnkoff had a squeeze bunt to score McLaughlin and get Spofford to third base. Skylar Labbe followed up with a double to bring in Spofford with the fourth run.

In the sixth, Wiley Holton had a one-out single and later stole second base. Swartz singled to bring Holton to third base. McLaughlin doubled again to bring in both runners for a 6-3 lead.

The Eagles (10-7) answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Briana Brochu tripled to lead off the inning and Chloe Gorey came up next and smacked a double to make it 6-4. Olivia Smith later doubled to plate Gorey with the final run of the game. Wiley Holton was able to get a pop up for the second out and Holly Lallis came on to pitch and get the final out of the sixth on a pop to shortstop.

Husson, which batted last because the games were originally supposed to be played in Bangor, left one runner on in the seventh inning.

Morgan Coleman had a two-run single to bring in Arika Brochu and Briana Brochu in the first inning. The Eagles added a third run in the third when Nicole Andrade scored on a double steal.

Healy was the pitching story in the nightcap, striking out six and walking two in her shutout. The hitting story was Tamara Aunchman's two home runs and three hits in the game. Casey Lopes added two hits, two RBI, and one run scored.

Aunchman led off the bottom of the second with her first homer of the game. Lopes doubled to bring in Sarah Bragg and Jen Jones to make it 3-0. Briana Brochu singled to score Lopes with the fourth run.

In the fourth inning, Olivia Smith had a one-out walk and Aunchman doubled her to third base. The Mules were able to get the second out of the inning, but Olivia Maynard ripped a double to score two runs.

Aunchman homered with one out in the sixth inning for the final run.

Labbe led the Mules with two hits, while Lallis and Spofford were both 1-for-2.
