COLBY SOFTBALL EARNS THIRD STRAIGHT SPLIT

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Colby College softball team needed only one big inning, scoring seven times in the second to pull out a 7-2 victory over Oberlin College in Florida on Tuesday.

The Mules, now 3-3 overall, fell 6-0 to Buena Vista in their other game. Colby is off on Wednesday and will play Union College at 11:30 a.m. Thursday. The Mules also take on Calvin College on Thursday at 2 p.m.

Robin Spofford had three hits, one run, one stolen base, and one RBI in the win against Oberlin. She is hitting a robust .600 in the first six games of the season.

Katie McLaughlin is up to .429 after driving in three runs on two hits and scoring a run in the victory. Emily Dougherty and Emma Hommeyer both had two hits, an RBI, and one run scored. Skylar Labbe also had two hits and scored a run. Dougherty is hitting .444 and Hommeyer is at .375.

Wiley Holton won her second game of the season by allowing seven hits over seven innings. She also struck out two and walked two. Holton helped her own cause with a hit and a run scored.

After Oberlin took a 1-0 lead on a homer in the top of the second inning, Colby exploded with five straight hits to start the bottom of the inning.

Hommeyer led off with a single, moved to second on a Dougherty single, and then loaded the bases when Holly Lallis singled. McLaughlin ripped a bases clearing triple to put Colby up for good. Spofford followed with a single to bring in McLaughlin. Spofford stole second base and moved to third on a passed ball. Grace Farnkoff had an RBI ground out to second base to plate Spofford with the fifth run. After a Skylar Labbe single and a fly ball for the second out, Holton singled to push Labbe to second. Hommeyer, with her second at-bat of the inning, singled to bring in Labbe and push Holton to third base. Dougherty followed with her second single of the inning to bring in Holton.

Colby ran into a hot pitcher in the opener in Moriah Guyett, who earned the shutout with seven strikeouts and no walks. She allowed just two hits, both singles by McLaughlin and Farnkoff.

Buena Vista only led 1-0 before scoring twice in the fourth and three times in the fifth.

UMPI softball team looks to build off USCAA tournament appearance

PRESQUE ISLE, Me (WAGM) - The UMPI softball team is about to start a week long road trip that features 12 games. Last year the Owls racked up 26 wins and made to the USCAA playoffs for the first time.

"It was an amazing experience, I never experienced that at high school. We never went far in any of my sports so it was a great experience," said junior Nicole Marucci.

"Making it to nationals last year was a goal for us and it was great to achieve that goal. Once we got there it kind of took us by shock playing on that stage and we didn't perform as well as we wanted to," added junior Sara Packard.

COLBY SOFTBALL FINISHES TRIP WITH TWO LOSSES

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Colby College softball team ended the week with a 4-6 record after falling 4-3 in eight innings to Elmhurst College and 8-0 to New Paltz State on Friday.

The Mules lost their second straight extra inning game in the setback to Elmhurst. Colby received fine starting pitching from Julia Saul, who allowed just two earned runs over six innings. Holly Lallis gave up just one hit in the final two innings.

Robin Spofford had two of Colby's five hits, while Grace Farnkoff had a two-run double. Carly Swartz and Paige Hartnett had the other Mule hits.

After Elmhurst scored twice in the top of the second inning, the Mules took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Saul led off with a walk and moved to second on a Swartz single. Saul scored and Swartz advanced to third when Elmhurst's pitcher had a throwing error on a ball hit by Lallis. Katie McLaughlin pushed Lallis to second with a sacrifice bunt. After a second out, Farnkoff doubled to bring in Lallis and Swartz.

Elmhurst (6-5) scored a lone run in the top of the fourth to go ahead for good.

Spofford finished the week with a .531 batting average after adding two more hits against New Paltz. She was 17-for-32, scored eight runs, drove in six, and had four stolen bases.

Farnkoff, Skylar Labbe, and Wiley Holton also had hits.

New Paltz scored four runs in the top of the first inning to take control.
