TRINITY SOFTBALL WINS PITCHING DUEL OVER COLBY, 1-0

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Trinity College pitcher Lindsay Golia and Colby College right-hander Wiley Holton both pitched complete games, but the Bantams scored a lone in the first inning and made it hold up in a 1-0 victory in NESCAC East play Friday at the Colby Baseball/Softball Complex.

The Bantams remain in first place in the division with an 8-2 record and are 19-11 overall. The Mules fell to 9-17 overall and 2-8 in the league. The two teams will play a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday at Colby.

Golia improved to 11-6 overall with the shutout and has 104 innings pitched this season. She allowed just four hits, struck out three, and walked two.

Holton also was on her game, striking out one and walking one while allowing six hits. Four of the six hits came in the first inning, but Holton was able to get out of the jam by allowing just one run.

Erica Merullo opened the game with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Michelle Treglia. Nicole Towner followed with a single to bring in the lone run of the game. Holton left two runners stranded.

Towner was 2-for-3 to lead the Bantams, who did not commit an error. Merullo, Courtney Erickson, Natalie Bruno, and Meghan Race had the other hits. Merullo also had a stolen base.

Carly Swartz had two of Colby's four hits, while Grace Farnkoff and Kathleen Mason had the other singles. Farnkoff also had a stolen base.

Colby left two runners on base in the fourth and fifth innings. The Mules had runners at second and third with two outs in the fourth. Mason and Swartz had back-to-back singles to lead off the fifth inning.

Bruno finished with 11 putouts at first base for Trinity.

COLBY SOFTBALL EARNS SWEEP OF TRINITY

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College softball team scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out a 7-6 win in the opener and pitcher Wiley Holton threw a two-hit shutout for a 4-0 victory in the nightcap in two wins over Trinity College on Saturday at the Colby Baseball/Softball Complex.

The Mules improved to 11-17 and finish 4-8 in the NESCAC East. Trinity dropped to 19-13 overall and 8-4 in the league. Despite the losses, the Bantams will still make the conference playoffs.

Holton won both games for the Mules, who finish the season with a home doubleheader against Brandeis University on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Holton gave up a double to Natalie Bruno and a single to Nikki Andersen. She struck out two and walked three. Holton was able to get 11 ground outs and eight outs in the air. The NESCAC Pitcher of the Week this past Monday, Holton improved to 8-7 overall.

The Mules scored all four of their runs in the fourth inning of the second game. Skylar Labbe led off with a walk, moved to second on Paige Hartnett's one-out single, and took third on Grace Farnkoff's single to load the bases. Holton followed with an RBI walk for the first run. Julia Saul smacked a two-run single to plate Hartnett and Farnkoff. Carly Swartz brought in Holton with the final run on a ground out.

Holton was lights out over the final three innings, retiring the final 11 batters of the game.

Farnkoff was 2-for-2, walked once, and scored the run. Saul had the two RBI and had 11 putouts without an error at first base.

Trailing 6-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Mules exploded for six hits in the inning. Saul opened with a single and left the game for pinch-runner Emily Dougherty. Swartz singled to push Dougherty to second base, while Katie McLaughlin doubled to left field to bring in Dougherty and get Swartz to third base.

The Mules got their fourth run on an unusual play. Robin Spofford bunted and the ball barely got out of the batter's box. Trinity catcher Nicole Towner picked up ball and tagged Swartz, but the force of Swartz coming in from third knocked the ball loose. Swartz fell to the ground and then got up to score the fourth run.

Skylar Labbe cut the lead to 6-5 when her single scored McLaughlin and got Spofford to third base. After a steal of second by Labbe, Ella Hommeyer plated Labbe with an RBI ground out to second base to tie the game on Spofford's run. Paige Hartnett had a quality at-bat, smacking a single to left field with two strikes to bring in Labbe with the seventh run.

Trinity had a 4-1 lead after two innings. The Bantams scored twice in the first inning. Erica Merullo was hit by a pitch, stole second base, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Michelle Treglia. After a walk to Towner, Courtney Erickson doubled to bring in Merullo. Bruno followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Towner.

The Mules answered with a lone run in the bottom of the first. McLaughlin singled and went to second on a sacrifice by Spofford. Labbe was hit by a pitch and Hartnett singled with two outs to score McLaughlin.

The Bantams added two more runs in the second. Andersen had a one-out single and moved to second on a passed ball. Michelle Treglia tripled to bring in the run and then scored on a throwing error on the play.

The Mules cut the lead to 4-2 when Hartnett walked with two outs and scored on a double by Farnkoff.

Treglia had two more RBI in the top of the sixth inning to push the lead to 6-2. Meghan Golia and Meghan Race scored on the hit.

Hartnett went 3-for-3 on the day and walked one time. McLaughlin had three hits and scored twice, while Swartz went 2-for-2.

Treglia had two hits, three RBI, and scored one run. Anderson was 3-for-3 in the first game.

Holton entered the game in the sixth inning and pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn the victory. She allowed just one hit and walked none.
