Crosman and Caron Named 2016 Southern Maine Softball Captains

GORHAM, Maine –Senior Mary Caron (Lewiston, Maine/St. Dominic’s) and junior Samantha Crosman (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) have been named captains of the 2016 University of Southern Maine Huskies’ softball team. Head coach Sarah Jamo, in her fourth season with the Huskies, made the announcement as the team prepares for its season-opening game in Florida.

“Both Samantha and Mary play with confidence and have exhibited strong leadership on and off of the field,” said Jamo, the 2015 Little East Conference Coach of the Year. “Their play on the field has earned the respect from their teammates, peers and from the conference coaches. They both demonstrate the commitment and character necessary for our team to achieve our goals.”

Earning second team All-Little East Conference honors in her rookie season, Crosman has been a mainstay in the Huskies’ outfield and has seen time as the team’s designated player. With a .293 career batting average, Crosman has 71 career hits and 36 RBI. With the ability to hit for extra bases, Crosman has 17 career doubles. A steady defensive player, Crosman has 85 career putouts and two career assists. A history major and a two-sport standout, Crosman is also a starting midfielder for the Huskies’ field hockey team and is a William B. Wise Scholar Athlete.

Assuming the role of starting shortstop in her first season with the Huskies, Caron quickly asserted herself in the lineup hitting .353 with 49 hits in 139 at bats, including eight doubles, two triples and three home runs. Caron’s 23 RBI were good for fourth on the team, while her .504 slugging percentage was second on the team. Defensively, Caron stood out with a .940 fielding percentage, making just 10 errors over 168 chances with 71 putouts and 87 assists, while helping turn eight double plays.

Picked to finish fourth in the 2016 Little East Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, Southern Maine returns a bulk of its lineup from last season’s 24-20 squad, which marked the program’s first winning season since 2006. The Huskies’ 24 wins are the most since the 2004 season when they were 33-11-1, and their seven wins in conference action earned them their first berth into the Little East Conference post season tournament since the 2010. Advancing into the second day of the LEC tourney, USM continued its 2015 season earning its first post-season berth with a nod into the 2015 ECAC Division III New England Championship, earning the tourney’s second-seed.

Along with Caron and Crosman, Jamo returns 11 players from 2015, including sophomore catcher Courtney Davis (Woburn, Mass.) the 2015 Little East Conference Rookie of the Year and third team National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association (NFCA) All-Region selection. Davis, the team’s top returning hitter, had a .418 batting average collecting 61 hits in her rookie campaign, including eight doubles, two triples and four home runs, while driving in a team-leading 39 runs. Defensively, Davis was outstanding leading the Little East in runners caught stealing (12) with a .984 fielding percentage with 204 put outs and 37 assists.

Huskies’ junior Danni Humphrey (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) returns for her third season and will fulfill her role as Southern Maine’s first baseman. One of the Huskies’ top hitters over the last two seasons, Humphrey hit .327 (34-for-104) as a sophomore with eight doubles and 15 RBI.

Southern Maine also returns sophomores Amber Kelly (Berwick, Maine/Noble) and Taylor Lux (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy). Outstanding in the circle, Kelly pitched 117.2 innings with 87 strikeouts (5.87 per game) while allowing just 58 earned runs. Solid at the plate, Kelly hit .364 (52-for-145) with 13 doubles, one triple and one home run to drive in 24 runs. Kelly’s 13 doubles led the Huskies, while her 24 RBI were third on the team. The Huskies’ starting second baseman, Lux had a strong rookie campaign. With 79 put outs and 85 assists, Lux helped turn four double plays during the season. Efficient offensively, Lux drove in 14 runs while collecting 40 hits, including five doubles, for a .272 batting average.

Southern Maine opens its 2016 season in Florida and will face Macalester College on Friday, March 18 (3:00 p.m.) in its first contest of a 38-game slate. The Huskies will play 12 games during their annual Spring Break trip before returning north to the State of Maine. Southern Maine is scheduled to host its first home game of the season on Wednesday, March 30 (3:30 p.m.) against in-state opponent Bates College in a non-conference doubleheader. USM opens its 2016 Little East Conference schedule on the road on Saturday, April 2 (1:00 p.m.) at Rhode Island College.
