COLBY WOMEN'S HOCKEY TIES SAINT ANSELM, 2-2

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Halley Fine made 59 saves in 65 minutes of action to help the Colby College women's hockey team to a 2-2 overtime tie with Saint Anselm College on Tuesday night at Alfond Rink.

Fine stopped 21 shots in the third period and made six more saves in the overtime session.

Colby moved to 0-5-2 overall, while the Hawks are 8-1-2. Saint Anselm had a 61-21 shot advantage.

The Hawks scored the lone goal of the opening period at 9:56 after Colby was called for icing. With the face-off to the left of Fine, the Hawks' Alison Butler won the draw and Paige Gorecki came in behind and took the puck. Gorecki's first shot was blocked, but she stayed with the play and was able to get her second shot past Fine.

The Mules tied the game at 2:43 of the second period on the first collegiate goal for Taylor Methven. Saint Anselm gave the puck away in Colby's zone near the blue line. Methven picked off the short passing attempt and raced past the benches as the Hawks' defense tried to get back. With a defender on her back, Methven ripped a shot past goalie Maddie Scavotto.

Despite the dominant shooting advantage, the Hawks fell behind 2-1 at 17:02 of the second period. Eleanor Knutzen won a puck in the right corner, skated toward the net, and passed the puck to a streaking Moira Mullaney. The puck hit Mullaney's stick and went right back to Knutzen in front for the goal.

With just 9.2 seconds left in the second period, the Hawks scored the final goal of the game. The Mules were unable to clear and Kaitlyn Spillane came up with the puck. Her hard shot was saved by Fine, but the rebound went directly to Maura Kieft for a one-timer.

Scavotto stayed unbeaten on the season at 6-0-2 with 19 saves for the Hawks.

Bowdoin shuts out Southern Maine 3-0 in men’s hockey
The Polar Bears keep their focus after two emotional losses to Colby and regroup for Tuesday's victory.

... “They have such high determination and they know how the game is supposed to be played, and how we play the game here at Bowdoin,” said Dumont. “Their experience level and their ability to put out fires was huge. Southern Maine had a good push in the third and our seniors really weathered the storm. It was a fitting way for those guys to get the shutout for (Cronin).”

Cronin, who turned away 21 shots, got his first shutout of the season and fourth of his career.

“They definitely had some pretty good shots in the second and third periods but we know with him back there he can save anything,” said Barrington. “We just tried to do our job to get pucks out and clear guys away from the front of the net, and give him a chance to see the puck. We feel like if we can do that, it’s pretty realistic in any game for him to come away with a shutout.”
