COLBY MEN'S HOCKEY DEFEATS 13TH-RANKED WILLIAMS, 4-1

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College men's hockey team went into the weekend at 1-9-2 against Williams College and Middlebury College the last three years, but ended Saturday with a 2-0 weekend after a 4-1 win over 13th-ranked Williams at Alfond Rink.

The Mules and Tufts University are tied for first place in the league standings at 2-0. Colby took a 2-1 win against Middlebury on Friday night.

Williams, a winner over Bowdoin on Friday, had the start they wanted in a second straight road game. Colby tried to break the puck out of their own zone, but the puck bounced off the stick of a Mule player to C.J. Shugart. The Williams junior hit a one-timer for the score just 1:22 into the game.

A few shifts later, Colby tied the game at 2:31 of the period. Nick O'Connor applied hard pressure on a Williams defenseman in the neutral zone and created a turnover. O'Connor chased down the loose puck, gained body position on the defender, and drove the far side of the net to tuck the puck around the pad of Eph goaltender Michael Pinios.

Play went back-and-forth the rest of the opening period. The Mules killed off two penalties and withstood pressure from the Ephs' power play.

The second period saw sustained pressure from the Mules. A lot of zone time led to a penalty call on Williams and the Mules responded on the ensuing power play. Geoff Sullivan had the puck at the top of the zone and fed the puck to fellow defender Jack Burton, who sent the puck across the Eph penalty kill for a one-timer goal from Devin Albert at 5:30 of the second period.

Williams came ready to play in the third, with numerous shifts of heavy pressure. On a neutral zone counter, Thomas Stahlhuth took a pass from Michael Decker and headed up ice where he was tripped by a Williams player. The power play saw great puck movement both high and low in the zone, with Burton feeding a pass to Albert behind the net. Albert immediately found O'Connor in the low slot, where he redirected the pass into the left corner of the net for his second goal at 17:08.

Just 34 seconds later, first-year JP Schuhlen chipped a puck over Colby's defensive blue line and headed up ice. Michael Rudolf drove the net hard, which created an opening in the high slot for Phil Klitirinos. Schuhlen put the puck right on Klitirinos' stick and he deposited the puck over Pinios' glove.

Colby first-year goalie Andrew Tucci made 25 saves to earn his second win. He allowed just two goals in the two league games.

INSUIK STOPS 44 SHOTS TO HELP WOMEN'S HOCKEY TIE BOWDOIN

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Hannah Insuik made 44 saves and the Colby College women's hockey team battled back from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 2-2 overtime tie with Bowdoin College on Saturday at Alfond Rink.

Both teams are now 0-0-1 overall heading into another game Sunday at Bowdoin at 3 p.m.

Insuik made 19 saves in the third period to keep Colby in the game. Her play in goal helped new Colby head coach Holley Tyng earn a point in her debut.

Colby cut the lead to 2-1 after Bowdoin picked up a cross-checking penalty at 6:37 of the third period. Cassidy Holzer scored her first collegiate goal at 8:13 when she was left alone in front and one-timed a cross from Delaney Flynn. The play started with Flynn going hard at the goal and lifting a backhand wide. She took off after her shot, regained possession behind the cage, and came around the other side to feed Holzer.

The Mules put sustained pressure on to force Bowdoin to ice the puck with 7:21 to play. On the ensuing face-off, Kailey Buxbaum won the draw back to first-year Taylor Methven, who quickly pushed the puck to McLaughlin for the shot and score.

The Polar Bears struck first at 12:17 of the opening period. A shot by Brigit Bergin was kicked to the corner by Insuik. Maureen Greason won the battle for the puck, came behind the net, was given too much room, and her backhand pass deflected off a Colby stick and into the net.

Bowdoin made it 2-0 in the second period at 2:43. The Polar Bears barely kept a puck from going over the blue line, got the play into the right corner, and then behind the net. Bergin took a pass between the two circles and ripped a shot for the score.

St. Denis finished with 20 saves for the Polar Bears.

COLBY: SULLIVAN NAMED NESCAC MEN'S HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College's Geoff Sullivan (Topsfield, Mass.) was honored Monday as the New England Small College Athletic Conference Men's Hockey Player of the Week after helping the Mules to two conference wins.

Sullivan, who plays on defense and is a co-captain, had the overtime goal in a 2-1 victory over Middlebury on Friday and then had an assist on the game-winning goal in 4-1 win over 13th-ranked Williams on Saturday.

Sullivan's blast from near the right boards at 2:11 of overtime was the winner against Middlebury. With the score 1-1 against Williams in the second period, Sullivan had an assist on the winning goal in a game where Colby scored twice in the final three minutes to pull away.

Sullivan was part of a defense that allowed just two goals with first-year goaltender Andrew Tucci. He has five goals and 31 assists for 36 career points.
