COLBY: MEN'S HOCKEY LOADED WITH EXPERIENCE HEADING INTO OPENER

WATERVILLE, Maine -- With the top 10 scorers all back on the ice, the Colby College men's hockey team will have winning expectations heading into the 2016-17 season.

The Mules will start the season Friday at home against Middlebury College at 7 p.m. Colby gets another test Saturday at 3 p.m. at Alfond Rink against 13th-ranked Williams College. All men's hockey home games will be webcast at http://www.nsnsports.net/colleges/colby/

"We seem to have a group determined to explore their potential to lofty heights," Colby head coach Blaise MacDonald said. "We have a great group of seniors that are doing a wonderful job of leading and setting the course for the season. Like all seasons, you must be willing and able to adjust to your environment and circumstances and move forward on a consistent basis."

The Mules have so much experience on the roster that Devin Albert (Reading, Mass.) and EJ Rauseo (Methuen, Mass.) will be co-captains for the second straight year. Albert was second on Colby in scoring last year with 11 goals and eight assists for 19 points. He is Colby's active career scoring leader with 26 goals and 28 assists for 54 points. Rauseo was fourth in scoring (4 goals, 12 assists) and has 20 goals and 31 assists for 51 career points.

"We return many players that played in big moments and played big quality minutes, so this experience should serve us well," MacDonald said. "I do think our greatest asset is our quality depth across the board and this will lend itself to competitive practices and competition to see who is in the line-up on the weekends."

Cam MacDonald (Westford, Mass.), the son of the head coach, led the Mules (9-11-5 overall in 2016) in scoring with six goals and 14 assists for 20 points as a sophomore. Nick O'Connor (5 goals, 7 assists, Canton, Mass.), Michael Rudolf (5 goals, 5 assists, Zug, Switzerland), Kevin Doherty (3 goals, 5 assists, Wakefield, Mass.), and Mario Benicky (3 goals, 5 assists, Liptovsky Mikulas, Slovakia) are top scorers returning on the forward line.

Seniors Colin Reilly (2 goals, 4 assists, Pelham, N.Y.) and Scott Fenwick (2 goals, 2 assists, Quispamsis, New Brunswick) also return as forwards along with juniors Griffin Fadden (1 goal, 1 assist, Concord, Mass.) and Phil Klitirinos (Dollard-Des-Ormeaux, Quebec). Sophomores John Rourke (1 goal, Wellesley, Mass.) and Zack Hale (1 assist, Minneapolis, Minn.) also return.

Colby's defense is just as experienced as the offense, with seven players returning. Senior Jack Burton was third on the team in scoring with seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points. Burton was recently named one of three star players in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) by the New England Hockey Journal.

Geoff Sullivan (Topsfield, Mass.) was fifth in scoring with two goals and 13 assists. He will bring senior leadership along with Burton and Kai Frankville (1 goal, 2 assists, La Jolla, Calif.). Juniors Michael Decker (2 goals, 9 assists, Algonquin, Ill.), Dan Dupont (2 assists, Wallingford, Conn.), and Andrew Reis (Burlington, Ontario) will play major roles. Sophomore Thomas Stahlhuth (3 assists, St. Louis, Mo.) also returns.

While Andrew Tucci (Toronto, Ontario) will start in goal as a first-year, he has experience. He played junior hockey last year with the Hawkesbury Hawks of the Central Canada Hockey League (CJHL). Sophomore goalies Mack Burton (Columbus, Ohio) and Robbie DeAngelo (Boston, Mass.) also return.

Tucci is one of six first-year players to join the veteran team. Mark Leprine (New Fairfield, Conn.) is the one first-year player to join the defense. Kienan Scott (Spokane, Wash.), JP Schulen (Longmeadow, Mass.), Paddy Daley (Sudbury, Mass.), and Robert Cerepak (Saddle River, N.J.) are forwards.

COLBY : SULLIVAN SCORES IN OT TO HELP COLBY MEN'S HOCKEY BEAT MIDDLEBURY

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Geoff Sullivan scored with 2:49 left in overtime and fellow senior EJ Rauseo had the other goal to lift Colby College to a 2-1 victory over Middlebury College in NESCAC men's hockey Friday night at Alfond Rink.

The Mules open the season at 1-0 heading into a tough 3 p.m. home game with 13th-ranked Williams College on Saturday. The Panthers (0-1) play at Bowdoin College on Saturday at 4 p.m. Williams took a 4-3 win over the Polar Bears.

Sullivan scored arguably his biggest collegiate goal when the Mules put some pressure on in Middlebury's zone. Sullivan was near the right boards and had a tough angle on the game-winning shot. Rauseo and Kienan Scott, who had his first collegiate point, had assists on the play.

The Mules nearly won the game with just over four minutes left in the overtime session. Michael Rudolf was just off the right post when a puck took a bounce to him. He tried to swipe the puck into the net, but the shot went through the crease.

After a scoreless first period, Rauseo scored on the power play at 14:31 of the second period off assists from Kai Frankville and Kevin Doherty.

Middlebury, though, scored at 16:02 when Colby goalie Andrew Tucci, who earned a win in his first collegiate start, got caught behind his cage. Panther first-year Trevor Turnbull scored into the empty net off an assist from classmate Mitchell Allen.

Tucci was credited with 17 saves, while Middlebury goalie Stephen Klein had 28 saves.

COLBY WOMEN'S HOCKEY OPENS SEASON SATURDAY AT HOME

WATERVILLE, Maine -- With a new coaching staff and eight first-year players on the roster, the Colby College women's hockey team opens the season Saturday at 7 p.m. at Alfond Rink against rival Bowdoin College.

Interim head coach Holley Tyng is a collegiate head coach for the first time. She was an associate head coach at Dartmouth College. Meghann Treacy who played goalie at the University of Maine, is the new assistant coach.

"The energy and excitement going into the season has been contagious," Tyng said. "The team has been working extremely hard to prepare for the season and our learning curve has been steadily on the rise. We've been throwing a ton at them and they're doing an excellent job in executing the details and principles we're trying to enforce as a staff."

The Mules (6-16-3 overall last year) return their top four scorers from a year ago, but two of the four are studying abroad in the first semester. Colby also has four players coming off injury issues.

Senior co-captains Katie McLaughlin (Glenburn, Maine) and Nicole Donato (Duxbury, Mass.) will lead the team. McLaughlin was tied for second in scoring last year with nine goals and eight assists for 17 points. She is Colby's career active scoring leader with 19 goals and 29 assists for 48 points. Donato finished with a pair of assists, but missed nine games due to injury.

Junior forward Bella Papapetros (North Andover, Mass.) led Colby in scoring with nine goals and nine assists for 18 points. Junior Sasha Fritts (Darien, Conn.) was tied for second in scoring with nine goals and eight assists, while senior Delaney Flynn led the team in assists (10) and had six goals.

Eleanor Knutzen (Winchester, Mass.), Kailey Buxbaum (Gloucester, Mass.), Carly Thomas (Lincolnshire, Ill.), Meredith Keenan (Sherman, Conn.), and Lucy Dembeck (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) all return at forward. First-year forwards Moira Mullaney (Worcester, Mass.), Cassidy Holzer (Minneapolis, Minn.), and Tess Dupre (Dover, Mass.) will look to make an impact.

Lily Santonelli (Boston, Mass.), Cassidy Holzer (Minneapolis, Minn.), and Tess Dupre (Dover, Mass.) are first-year forwards.

Brooke Gary (Boxborough, Mass., 5 assists), Anna Rudinski (Morristown, N.J., 1 goal, 2 assists), Mikayla McLaughlin (Glenburn, Maine, 2 goals), and Jacqueline Seymour (Canton, Mass.) return on defense.

First-years Grace Crowell (Medfield, Mass.), Izzy Tegtmeyer (Portland, Ore.), and Taylor Methven (Andover, N.H.) will add to the defense. Mullaney also could play on defense.

First-year goalie Halley Fine (Minneapolis, Minn.) and senior Hannah Insuik (Andover, Mass.) are Colby's goalies.
