Colby men's ice hockey enjoying great season

WATERVILLE (WGME) – The Colby men's ice hockey team is enjoying one of its best seasons in years.
The Mules are hitting on all cylinders, thanks to some great leadership both on the ice and on the bench.

COLBY MEN'S HOCKEY LOSES TOUGH OVERTIME GAME TO TRINITY

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The 13th-ranked Colby College men's hockey team tied the game at 4:29 of the third period, but 14th-ranked Trinity College scored on a transition goal in overtime to pull out a 2-1 NESCAC victory Friday night.

The Mules are 10-6-4 overall and 8-4-3 in conference play, while the Bantams improve to 12-6-3 and 8-5-2 in the league. Williams College won on Friday to take over first place in the league with 21 points. The Mules are in second with 19, while three teams (Trinity, Hamilton, Wesleyan) all have 18 points. Colby plays at Wesleyan on Saturday at 3 p.m.

EJ Rauseo scored the tying goal and his sixth of the season off assists from Kevin Doherty and Phil Klitirinos, who picked up his 12th of the year. Klitirinos started the play by pushing a pass off the wall to Doherty, who hit Rauseo for the redirect.

The Cole brothers had assists on Anthony Sabitsky's 13th goal of the season at 2:56 of overtime. Ryan Cole started the play and got it to Brandon Cole for a two-on-one with Sabitsky. Brandon Cole waited for goalie Sean Lawrence to commit and slid a pass across to Sabitsky for the score.

Ryan Cole had Trinity's goal in the opening period at 4:24 from Tyler Whitney and Griffyn Martin.

Lawrence had 13 of his 29 saves in the opening period for Colby. Alex Morin stopped 31 shots for the Bantams.

NO. 13 COLBY MEN'S HOCKEY HOLDS OFF WESLEYAN, 3-2

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The 13th-ranked Colby College men's hockey team bounced back from a tough overtime loss on Friday night to take a 3-2 win over Wesleyan University on Saturday in NESCAC play.

The Mules improve to 11-6-4 overall and 9-4-3 in the league, while the Cardinals fall to 12-6-4 and 7-5-4 in the conference. Colby will finish the regular season with home games against Connecticut College on Friday at 7 p.m. and Tufts University at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Mules have not lost a home conference game this season.

Colby goaltender Sean Lawrence stopped 36 shots and Michael Rudloff had a pair of goals against the Cardinals. Wesleyan had a 38-25 shot advantage, but the Mules went up 2-0 to take control.

After a scoreless opening period, Rudolf scored his sixth of the season from Cam MacDonald and Phil Klitirinos at 2:24 of the second period. MacDonald has 10 assists on the season.

MacDonald's fifth goal of the year at 3:52 of the third period put Colby up by two scores. Mark Leprine and EJ Rauseo had assists on the play.

After a Mule hooking penalty, Wesleyan cut the margin in half at 5:41 on a goal from Cam McCusker.

Rudolf scored the eventual game-winning goal at 8:25 from Leprine and Klitirinos' 14th assist of the season.

Wesleyan pulled its goaltender and made it interesting when James Kline scored with just 42 seconds to play.

COLBY FINE STOPS 45 SHOTS FOR WOMEN'S HOCKEY IN LOSS

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Halley Fine finished with 45 saves, including 20 in the opening period, for the Colby College women's hockey team in a 6-0 loss to seventh-ranked Middlebury College on Saturday.

Colby (0-18-3 overall, 0-14-1 NESCAC) and the Panthers (13-6-2, 8-4-1) will play again Sunday at 1 p.m. (new time start).

Fine's 20 stops in the first 20 minutes helped Colby trail only 1-0 at intermission. Maddie Winslow scored 3:43 into the game.

Janka Hlinka made it 2-0 at 4:25 of the second period, but Fine still kept the Mules close until the Panthers scored twice in the final 4:36 of the period. Anna Zumwinkle scored both goals, her first two of the season.
