COLBY MEN'S HOCKEY BEATS NO. 13 AMHERST, 5-2

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College men's hockey team exploded for three goals in the final 10:08 of the third period to pull out a 5-2 victory over 13th-ranked Amherst College on Saturday at Alfond Rink.

The Mules move to 10-5-4 overall and 8-3-3 in the NESCAC. Colby is tied with Williams College for first place in the conference. Amherst dropped to 11-5-3 and 6-5-3 in the league.

Colby moved to 6-0-1 in home conference games after a weekend sweep. The Mules took a 1-0 win over seventh-ranked Hamilton College on Friday.

Colby scored on the power play at 9:52 of the third period to go ahead for good. Jack Burton did a fine job of keeping the puck in the zone on the right wall. The puck came out to Michael Rudlof, who ripped a shot for the game-winning score.

Burton also had an assist on the fourth goal at 11:24. He pushed a pass off the right boards to JP Schuhlen, who went on a two-on-one with fellow first-year Kienan Scott. Schuhlen pushed a pass over to Scott, who immediately got the puck back to Schuhlen for the score.

The Mules scored a second goal on the power play when Cam MacDonald tallied off a long rebound. Kai Frankville took the original shot and had an assist along with EJ Rauseo.

The rest of the scoring came in the opening period and started at 3:08 on a Colby transition. Dan Dupont passed the puck to Phil Klitirinos, who caught Thomas Stahlhuth in stride. Stahlhuth skated over the blue line and had his shot slightly deflect off an Amherst defenseman and into the right corner of the goal.

The Purple & White tied the game at 1-1 at 14:02. Noah Gilreath chased down a puck to the right corner and made a cross as he was falling down. Jack Fitzgerald was able to get a stick on the puck and the shot was saved by goalie Andrew Tucci. The rebound, however, went to Joey Lupo on the left post for the score.

Colby scored its second goal thanks to some fine checking in Amherst's zone. MacDonald took a shot that deflected to Kevin Doherty, whose shot was saved. However, the rebound went right to Rauseo on the right post for the goal.

Amherst scored its second goal off a face-off in Colby's zone. Gilreath's shot from the left point was saved by Tucci, but David White was at the right post to hammer in the rebound.

Tucci finished with 29 saves in pushing his record to 7-3-3. Connor Girard made 27 stops for Amherst.

Rudlof won 19 of his 30 face-off attempts for Colby.

COLBY MEN'S HOCKEY BACK IN NATIONAL RANKINGS AT NO. 13

WATERVILLE, Maine -- After dropping out of the national poll for one week, the Colby College men's hockey team won two big games this past weekend to make the rankings again at 13th in the United States College Hockey Online Division III poll.

The Mules (10-5-4 overall) took a 1-0 win over then seventh-ranked Hamilton College and a 5-2 victory against 13th-ranked Amherst College. Hamilton dropped to ninth in this week's poll and Amherst is now receiving votes.

Colby had its non-conference game with University of England on Tuesday postponed due to inclement weather. The Mules will play at 14th-ranked Trinity College on Friday at 7 p.m. and then face another tough game at Wesleyan University at 3 p.m. Saturday.
