Lyndon’s Late Rally Sinks UMF in Final Minutes

FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team (1-11, 1-5) was topped by Lyndon State College (5-5, 1-3) on Saturday afternoon with a 73-69 North Atlantic Conference loss at Dearborn Gymnasium.

The Beavers walked into the locker room at halftime with a nine-point advantage, but the Hornets started the second half on an 18-4 run. The two squads traded baskets until the 7:20 mark when Anfernee Dent (Jackson, Miss./Daegu) and Sean Murphy (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) nailed UMF's next three shots from beyond the arc.

Lyndon took a 69-67 lead with 1:40 left in the contest with a bucket from Eric Vargas. Farmington had an opportunity to tie the game with 17 seconds to go with a pair of free throws, but it resulted in an empty trip. After Lyndon made a pair of free throws, Murphy scored a quick layup for the Beavers with six seconds remaining. After another UMF desperation foul, the Hornets sealed the deal with two more free throws with only seconds left on the clock.

UMF had three players score in double figures. Dent and Murphy led the way with 15 points apiece and each sank three shots from long range. Nick Hilton also matched the pair with 15 points and eight rebounds. Hilton also made 7-of-10 attempts from the free throw line.

Xavier Colbert led the Hornets' offense with a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds. Gabriel Torres followed up with 15 points with all of his shots coming from three-point land. Avery King added 13 points for the Hornets off the bench.

UMaine-Farmington hosts Maine Maritime Academy on Tuesday evening.

Nichols Erupts for a Career-High in Thomas Loss

WATERVILLE, Maine -- University of Maine at Farmington (1-12, 1-6) senior point guard Logan Nichols (Minot, Maine/Poland) erupted for a career-high 28 points on Saturday night as the Beavers' attempt at a season sweep of Thomas College (7-8, 3-5) fell short with an 88-76 North Atlantic Conference loss.

Nichols was efficient from the floor (6-for-9), especially from long range (4-for-5), but really made his presence known from the foul line by making 12 free throws in 12 attempts. Nichols also dished three assists and grabbed a rebound. Eric Berry (Weld, Maine/Mt. Blue) also shot 6-for-9 from the field for 17 points. Berry made both attempts from three-point land and all three shots at the line. Anfernee Dent (Jackson, Miss./Daegu) added nine points and Sean Murphy (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) contributed eight points for UMF off the bench.

Thomas' starters powered the offense as four out five starters netted double figures. Justin Murray scored a team-high 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting and passed six assists. Levi Barnes and Mike Akanji each scored 17 points and Dayne Savage added 12 points for the Terriers.

The Beavers were playing the role of comeback kids for most of the game and overcame early deficits to build an eight-point advantage with seven minutes left in the first half. The two squads traded baskets for the remainder of the half and UMF held a 42-41 advantage at the break.

With 3:40 left in the contest, the Terriers led 71-69 and powered a 17-9 run to close out the game and made 8-of-8 attempts from the free throw line in the final minutes.

UMaine-Farmington returns to action on Friday as the team hosts New England College.
