Whittemore; Mariners Finish Second at Thomas Invite

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Maine Maritime sophomore Chase Whittemore shot a career-best round of 73 to finish in a three-way tie for second place at the Thomas College Invitational on Wednesday. Whittemore paced Maine Maritime to a second place finish in the six-team tournament.

Whittemore's 74 was a single stroke behind St. Joseph's Cam Letourneau, who claimed individual medalist honors. Letourneau was one of three Monks to finish in the top two spots. Adam Batchelder and Adam Hachey both matched Whittemore's 74 for second place.

St. Joe's won the tournament with a 297, 10-strokes better than Maine Maritime, which had 20 strokes on the rest of the field. The Mariners 307 on Wednesday is three strokes better than any round previously shot by Maine Maritime this season.

Keenan Kalthoff marked down 75 strokes to go five over on the par 70 course. That effort was good enough for fifth place in the field of 30 golfers. It was Kalthoff's 17th top-five finish in 27 career events.

Mariners freshman Erich Klopfer finished a single stroke behind Kalthoff, tying with St. Joe's Mike Caron for sixth place. Kevin Pepin logged an 82 for sole ownership of 12th place to round out Maine Maritime's scoring contingent.

Luke Olson finished in a four-way tie for 14th with an 84, keeping Maine Maritime's entire lineup on the top half of the final results.

The Mariners return to action this weekend for the 36-hole Husson Invitational at Bangor Municipal.
