Southern Maine Wins 13th Annual Queenan Memorial Tournament

CASCO, Maine – University of Southern Maine posted a 315 team score to win the 13th Annual John Queenan Memorial Tournament at Point Sebago Golf Resort on Tuesday. The Huskies won by three strokes, as University of New England carded a 318 collective score to finish as the runner-up and Saint Joseph's, by virtue of the tie-breaker, placed third with a 318 team card.

Husson senior Greg Martin (Ellsworth, Maine) claimed medalist honors with a one-under-par 71 (33-38) card and became the ninth different Eagles golfer to win the Queenan crown. USM senior Tom Murray finished second with a 73 (36-37) and Monks freshman Cam Letourneau (Hebron, Maine) placed third with 76 (39-37).

A pair of UNE players - senior Paul Butkevich (Pomfret, Conn.) and junior Ryan Mahoney (Haverhill, Mass.) - and SJC freshman Adam Hachey finished in a tie for fourth after all three turned in a 77 scorecard at the end of the day.

Southern Maine earns the Queenan team title for the second-consecutive season and fourth time overall after featuring three linkers with an 80 card or better, as juniors Shawn Francouer (Windham, Maine) and Brett Howard (Windham, Maine) both shot an 80 for the Huskies.

Husson (323), University of Maine-Farmington (333) and Thomas College (370) rounded out the participating teams in the annual tourney.

For Saint Joseph's, senior Ryan Berard (Millville, Mass.) carded an 80 (43-37), junior Michael Caron (Gorham, Maine) shot an 85 (45-40) and freshman Adam Bachelder (Portland, Maine/Cheverus), making his NCAA debut, checked in with an 89 (47-42).

Saint Joseph's will participate in the Bowdoin College Invitational at Brunswick Country Club this Saturday and Sunday.

Terriers Finish Sixth at John Queenan Memorial

CASCO, ME – Thomas golf placed sixth overall with a score of 370 on Tuesday, participating in the John Queenan Memorial Tournament hosted by Saint Joseph's College. Junior Cameron Jackman was the low man for the Terriers with a score of 80.

Trevor Kitchin placed second for the squad with an 83, while Ryan Guevin carded a 105. Marcus Johnson and Bo Curtis rounded out the Thomas five with a 102 and 110 respectively.

The University of Southern Maine took team honors, carding a combined 315. Husson's Greg Martin was the individual leader on the day, scoring a 71.

The Terriers will next play Saturday, September 19 in the State of Maine Championship at Fairlawn Golf Club.

Southern Maine Wins St. Joseph's College John Queenan Memorial Tournament

RAYMOND, Maine – Junior Tom Murray (Bangor, Maine) shot a one-over-par 73 to finish second overall and lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a win at the 13th Annual John Queenan Memorial Tournament hosted by St. Joseph's College (Maine) Tuesday at Point Sebago Golf Resort.

Southern Maine took the top team spot with a score of 315 to best a six-team field. The University of New England and St. Joseph's tied for second totalling 318 strokes, while Husson finished fourth with a score of 323. UMaine Farmington finished ten strokes off of Husson with a 333 for a fifth place finish and Thomas College rounded out the field placing sixth with a score of 370.

Murray shot a 36 on the front nine and finished with a 37 on the back nine on the par-72, 6474-yard course. Murray was just two strokes off of individual medalist Greg Martin of Husson with shot a one-under 71. Juniors Shawn Francoeur (Windham, Maine) and Brett Howard (Windham, Maine) finished in a four-way tie for ninth place each firing an 80, while classmate Joseph Francoeur (Windham, Maine) placed 11th with an 82 to round out USM's scoring. Junior Alex Carroll (Searsport, Maine) was the Huskies' fifth golfer turning in an 87 on the day.

Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (9:30 a.m.) when they will compete in the Bowdoin College Invitational at the Brunswick Golf Club in Brunswick, Maine.

Mariners Take UMPI Invitational; Klopfer Individual Medalist

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy Golf picked up the team victory on Friday at the Maine-Presque Isle Invitational. Freshman Erich Klopfer (Palm Harbor, Fla.) reached the clubhouse with a one over par 73 to pace the field and take medalist honors.

Keenan Kalthoff (Fallbrook, Calif.) shot a 75 and Kevin Pepin (Candia, N.H.) turned a 77 on the day. The Maine Maritime Academy Black Team ended the day with an impressive 310 team total, while the Maine Maritime Academy Blue Team ended the day with a 352.

The Owls were led by Noah Bernard who shot an 83 and Eric Depner, who shot an 84. Maine-Presque Isle combined for a 360.

The Mariners return to action next Wednesday, September 16th when they host the Mariner Invitational at the Castine Country Club.

Wassarman leads women's golf past Bowdoin in opener

AUBURN, Maine -- Sophomore Kelly Wassarman was the medalist with an 81, as she led the Bates women's golf team to a season-opening victory over Bowdoin in a head-to-head match featuring Maine's only two varsity women's golf teams Saturday at Martindale Country Club.

Bates' foursome of players scored a combined 351 at Martindale, while visiting Bowdoin carded an aggregate 379.

Wassarman (Middleton, Wis.) shot an 81 and senior captain Elizabeth LaVerghetta (Norton, Mass.) scored an 87 to pace Bates, outscoring Bowdoin's top two, Haley Friesch (84) and Diya Chopra (87).

The Bobcats separated themselves more with their third and fourth finishers. Junior Sarah Centanni (Hingham, Mass.) shot a 90 and junior Penelope Ganske (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) carded a 93, undercutting Bowdoin's Meredith Sullivan and Rachel Kaye by a total of 25 strokes.

Bates and Bowdoin will face each other again next Saturday, Sept. 19, at Brunswick Golf Club.

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Sophomore Spencer Pierce fired a 76 on the first day of the season-opening Bowdoin Invitational, leading the Bates men's golf team to ninth place among 11 teams. The tournament concludes Sunday at Brunswick Golf Course.

Bates' top four players combined to shoot a 322, a stroke behind both St. Joseph's and UMaine-Farmington but ahead of CBB rivals Bowdoin (325) and Colby (354). Providence College is the first-day leader at 300.

Pierce (Winnetka, Ill.) tied for the 10th-best score among 61 players in the tournament. Behind him for the Bobcats were junior captain Brad Rutkin (Great Neck, N.Y.) at 80, sophomore Matt Marcus (Newton, Mass.) with an 81 and junior captain Alex Stekler (Avon, Conn.) shooting an 85.

LEWISTON, Maine - The Bates College women's golf team edged Bowdoin in a dual match played at Martindale Golf Club on Saturday.

The Bobcats totaled a four-player score of 351 while the Polar Bears carded 379.

How It Happened

Kelly Wasserman took medalist honors with a score of 81 for Bates
Haley Friesch was the low scorer for Bowdoin, recording a round of 84.
Diya Chopra finished in a tie for third place individually, scoring 87
Meredith Sullivan (96) and Rachel Kaye (112) rounded out the Bowdoin scorers.

Men's golf jumps up two places to seventh at Bowdoin Invitational

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bates men's golf team jumped ahead two spots on Sunday to finish seventh out of 11 teams at the season-opening Bowdoin Invitational, firing the fourth-best score in the field (633) for the day.

Bates entered the day in ninth place, but surged ahead of St. Joseph's (643) and UMaine-Farmington (654), also placing ahead of Bowdoin (644) and Colby (689). The Bobcats came four strokes behind sixth-place Nichols. Endicott won the event at 607.

Sophomore Matt Marcus (Newton, Mass.) scored a 75 on Sunday, tying for the seventh-lowest score in the field of 61. Junior captain Brad Rutkin (Great Neck, N.Y.) produced a 76 to tie Marcus for 17th place overall over two days, at 156. Sophomore Spencer Pierce (Winnetka, Ill.) finished at a team-best 155, tying for 15th place overall, following up Saturday's 76 with a 79. Junior captain Alex Stekler (Avon, Conn.) shot an 81 Sunday to finish 39th overall (166), rounding out Bates' scoring.

Bates plays at the Maine State Championships next, Sept. 19-20 at Fairlawn Golf Club in Poland.

Men's Golf Opens Season as Hosts at Bowdoin Invitational

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Endicott College men's golf team came away with the crown at the 2015 Bowdoin Invitational this weekend at Brunswick Golf Club.

The Gulls recorded a team score of 607 (307-300) to edge second-place Southern Maine (612) and St. Anselm (612). Bowdoin (644) finished in ninth place overall in the field of eleven teams in their season debut.

How It Happened

Paced by Ben Palazzo's fifth-place finish (75-75-150), Endicott had three of the top ten finishers on the day.
Husson's Greg Martin took medalist honors by shooting 145 (70-75).
Bowdoin was paced by a sixth-place finish from Thomas Spagnola, who carded a two-day total of 151 (77-74).
Martin Bernard was the second-best finisher for the Polar Bears, taking 13th with a score of 154 (76-78) while Kevin Perron ended in 34th at 162 (80-82)

Sullivan leads golf team with 78 Sunday

BRUNSWICK, Maine — The Colby College golf team received a 78 from Geoff Sullivan on Sunday to help the Mules finish with a two-day total of 689 at the Bowdoin Invitational at Brunswick Golf Club.

All five of Colby’s golfers had better rounds Sunday than Saturday. Sullivan opened with an 82 in Saturday’s round.
Colby captain Chris Gallogly and EJ Rauseo both had a two-day total of 170.
