Terriers Late Comeback Not Enough, Fall to Colby 4-2

WATERVILLE, ME – The Thomas College field hockey team fell to cross-town rival Colby 4-2 Wednesday night in a non-conference game at Bernatchez Field. Gabby Martell scored two goals in the loss.

The Mules scored their first goal four minutes into the contest. Misha Strange was credited with the goal on an assist from Megan Fortier.

The Terriers were able to hold the Mules to just the one goal in the first half, with goalkeeper Abbie Charrier making three timely saves. The Thomas offense also generated their own chances with three shots on goal and three corners, but were unable to get on the board and entered the half down 1-0.

After a string of chances, the Mules scored their second goal midway through the second half on a goal by Megan Fortier, assisted by Anna Rudinski.

The Terriers answered five minutes later with their first goal of the game. Brooklyn Curry received the ball on a corner and fired it towards net. Abigail Dunn tipped the ball to Martell who buried it into the back of the net to shorten the Mules lead to 2-1.

Thomas used the momentum from their first goal to generate multiple offensive opportunities over the next five minutes. With nine minutes remaining, Martell netted her second goal of the game to tie the score at two. Tiffany Weeks was credited with the assist on the tying goal.

Colby regained the lead just three minutes later when Katie Hutchinson scored to put the Mules up 3-2. The visitors added to their lead just over a minute later on Fortier's second goal of the game, extending the Mules lead to the final score of 4-2.

Colby goalkeeper Sarah Evans earned the win with five saves. Charrier was tagged with loss, recording 10 saves.

The Terriers will return to action on Sunday, September 13 in an 11:00 AM home contest against Simmons on Bernatchez Field.

Nelligan serving new role with Thomas field hockey team
Senior providing valuable leadership despite being sidelined with knee injury

WATERVILLE — Erin Nelligan never thought she would become a field hockey coach — at least not this soon, anyways.

Sometimes, though, life has other plans.

“It’s been really hard to take a step back from playing and it really breaks my heart not to be out there, but I’m just as happy on the sideline coaching,” said Nelligan, a senior at Thomas College. “I’m just trying to do as much as I can, but it has definitely been a different role not being out there.”

Weeks Pair of Goals Push Terriers Past Sharks

WATERVILLE, ME – The Thomas College field hockey team defeated the Simmons College Sharks 3-2 in a non-conference game at Bernatchez Field on Sunday afternoon. First year Tiffany Weeks scored two goals in the contest, including the game winner.

The Terriers struck first five minutes into the first half. Taylor Bergeron slid a pass towards the left post to Crystal Cunningham, who lifted a shot over the diving Simmons goaltender and into the back of the net to give Thomas the 1-0 lead.

Thomas extended their lead to 2-0 with ten minutes remaining in the first half. Erica Blake passed to Weeks, who fired a shot from just inside the circle and past the goalie for her first collegiate goal.

The Terriers withstood a surge by Simmons in the final five minutes of the half where Thomas keeper Abbie Charrier recorded three saves and Blake added a defensive save to keep the score at 2-0 going into the break.

The Sharks got on the board five minutes into the second frame. After a frenzy in front of the net, Julie Saltamartini netted the first Simmons goal to cut the Thomas lead to 2-1.

Simmons evened the score seven minutes later. Saltamartini stick handled through the Thomas defense and buried her second goal of the game to tie the score at two.

The Terriers regained the lead with six minutes left in the game. Weeks scored her second of the contest off a penalty stroke to give Thomas the game winning goal.

Charrier recorded nine saves and earned the win for the Terriers. Sharks goalie Brianna Rastello recorded four saves and was tagged with her first loss of the season.
