Women’s basketball battles hard in two overtime loss

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. — The Colby College women’s basketball team may not suffer a tougher loss in the 2015-16 season than Monday’s 94-91 double overtime game to University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth.

Despite playing at a high level in the second half and overtime, the Mules drop to 9-6 overall. The Corsairs improved to 10-5 overall.

UMass-Dartmouth needed a 3-point shot with 0.2 seconds left in regulation to tie the game and send it to overtime. There were eight lead changes in the fourth quarter.

There were five more lead changes in the first overtime when the Corsairs had the final shot. UMass-Dartmouth, though, never trailed in the second overtime.

Colby’s Desi Smith finished with a game-high 25 points, including 3-for-6 shooting from 3-point range and 10-for-11 from the foul line. Mia Diplock went 5-for-10 on 3-point shots and finished with 21 points and five assists. Haley Driscoll had a double-double with 18 points (8-for-8 from the line) and 11 rebounds, while Carylanne Wolfington scored 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Junior point guard MaryKate Caverly had six points, five assists, and five rebounds.

The Corsairs had five players in double figures, including Colleen Kane with 20 points on 5-for-8 shooting from 3-point range. Kane hit the 3-point shot with 0.2 seconds left in regulation.

Colby held a 67-63 lead after Smith made two free throws with 21.7 seconds to play. The Corsairs answered with a 3-point shot by Beth Castantini with 9.3 seconds left to cut the margin to one point.

The Mules did a good job of getting Smith the ball and she was fouled with 7.8 seconds remaining. Smith calmly sank two more free throws to push the lead to 69-66. Kane hit the tying 3-point shot from the left side.

The biggest lead in the first overtime was three points by the Corsairs, but Colby battled and took a 77-76 lead on Driscoll’s 2-for-2 effort from the foul line. UMass-Dartmouth got a layup from Danyel Gonzalez with 1:15 remaining to take a 78-77 lead. Both teams missed shots before Caitlyn Nolan was fouled and hit 1-for-2 at the foul line with 22 seconds remaining. The Corsairs missed inside at the buzzer to force a second overtime.

The Mules trailed 85-79 at one point in the second extra session, but fought back to tie it at 85-85. With the score 88-88, Gonzalez went 1-for-2 from the foul line and then Colby committed a turnover. Leah Douty went 1-for-2 from the line and the Mules had one final chance. Wolfington tried a long 3-point shot only to have the ball deflected.
