Women’s Soccer Announces 2015 Captains; Picked Sixth in NAC Preseason Poll

CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime Academy Women's Soccer has announced Tori Cooper (Saco, Maine), Morgan Libby (Brunswick, Maine) and Lauren McKenna (Wilmington, Mass.) as captains for the 2015 season.

Cooper, a senior International Business & Logistics major, led the team with five goals and five assists last season and received NAC Player of the Week honors.

"Tori arrived at Maine Maritime Academy in 2013. She brings a sense of calmness to the pitch and locker room," said Maine Maritime Academy Head Women's Soccer Coach Seth Brown, "More than anything, she wants this team to make the conference playoffs in her final season and establish MMA as a true NAC contender moving forward."

Libby, a junior Marine Biology major, scored three goals last season, including game-winners against Maine-Presque Isle and Thomas College.

"Mo is fierce! Every player on our team knows that Mo is the competitive standard," said Brown, "Each and every time Mo steps on the field we know we will get her best."

McKenna, a junior Marine Biology / Small Vessel Operations major, recorded one goal last season against Pine Manor.

"Lauren has anchored the back line for two years and has established herself as the glue that holds the group together," said Brown, "Lauren has the ability to step up in a group and quickly trouble shoot a problem, establish a plan and execute the solution."

On Thursday, the Mariners were selected to finish sixth in the NAC Preseason Poll, conducted by the leagues' coaches.

"The best thing about a preseason poll is its indication that the regular season is right around the corner," added Brown, "Our goal is to be in the conference tournament this season, which will require a tremendous amount of work and execution from our team to accomplish."

The Mariners, who received 43 points in the NAC Preseason Poll, will open up their season next Tuesday, September 1st, when they host Gordon College at 4:00 PM for a non-conference match.

Castleton University was tabbed as the favorite to win the 2015 North Atlantic Conference women's soccer championship after receiving six first place votes and a total of 96 points in the NAC preseason poll.

Colby-Sawyer College, the 2014 champion, was selected a close second with 93 points after garnering the remaining four first place votes. Husson University and New England College tied for third place after receiving 73 points apiece, while the University of Maine at Farmington placed fifth with 61 points.

Rounding out the poll was, Johnson State College in seventh (40 points), Thomas College in eighth (33 points), Lyndon State College in ninth (23 points), and Green Mountain College in 10th (15 points).

The 2015 NAC women's soccer campaign kicks off next week with nine teams in action. The top six teams in the 2015 regular-season conference standings will qualify for the NAC tournament, which gets underway Saturday, October 31, with quarterfinal action between seeds 3-6. The top two seeds will earn a bye in the first round and will take on the two quarterfinal winners in the semifinals on Tuesday, November 3. The two semifinal victors will battle for the NAC championship on Saturday, November 7.
