Arboleda provides Wildcats with 1-0 win over UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- First-year Byron Arboleda (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored in the 27th minute for the lone goal of the game, giving Johnson & Wales University a 1-0 non-conference men's soccer win over the University of New England Tuesday (Oct. 6) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

Arboleda notched his team-leading fifth marker of the year when he took a pass from sophomore Chris Schmid (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and pushed a left-footed shot near post from just inside the right side of the six. First-year Teagen Drake (Waterbury, Vt.) started the play and was credited with a secondary assist.

Arboleda would nearly make it 2-0 in the 60th minute, but UNE junior Elijah Leverett (North Yarmouth, Maine) came off his line to the top of the box and made a sliding save after Arboleda had broken in from the left side.

The Nor'easters' best scoring opportunity came in the 86th minute when first-year Sam Child (Falmouth, Mass.) directed a shot towards the Johnson & Wales goal, but a Wildcat defender cleared the ball away before it reached the goal line.

Senior Nick Tolman (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) had three saves to record the shutout for the Wildcats (8-4). Leverett had a busy game in goal for UNE, totaling seven stops.

The Nor'easters (2-9) are back in action Saturday at home when they face Western New England University in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match starting at 3:30 p.m.

Morra provides Cougars with 1-0 win over UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Vinny Morra converted a rebound in the 64th minute for the lone goal of the evening, as the Clark University Cougars defeated the University of New England, 1-0, in a non-conference men's soccer match played Thursday evening (Oct. 15) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

Neither team had many quality scoring chances until the midway through the second half when Alberto Polo-Herrera put a shot on goal that UNE keeper Jake Rostkowski denied with a diving stop. Morra came up with the rebound and directed a shot just inside the left post for his first goal of the season.

The Nor'easters had several opportunities to tie the game in the final 15 minutes but were unable to notch the equalizer. Tyler Garnick's blast from the top of the box slid just over the crossbar in the 76th minute, and Dan Good was denied from close range by Clark goalkeeper Alistair Richardson seven minutes later. With under 30 seconds remaining, Erik Holmqvist sent a shot just left of the frame.

Richardson had five saves to record the shutout for Clark (4-8-1), which held a narrow 15-13 margin in shots. Rostkowski finished with eight saves for UNE (2-12-0) in his first collegiate start.

Both teams are back in action Saturday with road conference games. The Cougars head to MIT for a 1 p.m. start, while the Nor'easters play at Wentworth in a tilt that gets underway at 3:30 p.m.

Nor'easters return to win column by edging USM

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine -- Finn Ducker and McGyver Poulin each scored early in the second half, and the University of New England held off the University of Southern Maine the rest of the way for a 2-1 non-conference men's soccer victory Monday afternoon (Oct. 19) at Hannaford Field.

The victory snapped a 10-game losing streak for the Nor'easters (3-13-0), who have now taken the last three meetings with the Huskies (1-11-1).

After a scoreless first half, UNE got into the scoring column in the 50th minute on a give-and-go between Finn Ducker and Erik Holmqvist. Ducker initiated the play and then converted the return feed from Holmqvist for the co-captain's second goal of the season.

The Nor'easters doubled their margin in the 61st minute when a header by Holmqvist was saved, but McGyver Poulin was on the spot to put his body on the rebound and deflect the ball into the goal for his first career marker.

USM would get one right back, however, when William Pearsall converted off a set piece. Ibrahim Mohamed's service found Kyle Curley, who headed the ball to his left to an open Pearsall.

Southern Maine threatened to tie the match several times over the final 30 minutes but was unable to come up with the game-tying score.

UNE rookie Jake Rostkowski had four saves to earn his first collegiate victory, while Simon Hulbert came up with three stops for the Huskies.

The Nor'easters will look to make it back-to-back wins Wednesday when they head to Gordon College for a Commonwealth Coast Conference match kicking off at 7 p.m.

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England scored three times in a span of less than five minutes to break open a scoreless contest on its way to a 3-0 shutout of Eastern Nazarene College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer match on Senior Day at Barbara J. Hazard Field on Saturday (Oct. 24).

After neither team was able to tally in the opening 45 minutes, the Nor'easters got their offense cranked up in the early stages of the second frame. Senior Will Bushey gave UNE a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute, heading home a cross from the right side by classmate Tyler Garnick.

UNE would double its lead less than three minutes later when first-year Connor McCarthy tucked in shot from close range after Eastern Nazarene keeper David Eddings had deflected away a cross by junior Ryan Stephens.

The Nor'easters struck again less than two minutes after McCarthy's marker. Garnick sent in a beautiful service from the left corner that sophomore Nick Paine got a head on to direct into the net.

UNE continued to apply heavy pressure the rest of the way, but would have to settle for a three-goal margin for the final outcome.

Senior Nate Diffin drew the start and was credited with five saves for the Nor'easters, who led 22-7 in shots.

The Lions had their best scoring chance of the afternoon in the 27th minute. Junior Elly Buford hit the post, and a follow-up attempt by sophomore Andrew Nelson was cleared off the goal line by a UNE defender.

Eddings had six stops in 60:39 of playing time for ENC before junior Jameson McFarland came on to register five saves to close out the match.

UNE (4-14-0, 1-7-0 CCC) will close out its season Tuesday when Roger Williams University comes to Biddeford for a 4 p.m. kick-off. The Lions (8-8-1, 0-7-1) host Wentworth Institute of Technology at 5:30 p.m. that same day.

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Tyler Kuchenbecker scored a goal in each half to help power the Roger Williams University men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the University of New England in the Commonwealth Coast Conference regular-season finale Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 27) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

The Hawks (8-8-1, 4-5 CCC) will be seeded sixth for the upcoming CCC Championship and await word on where they will travel for a quarterfinal-round game Saturday. UNE concludes its season with an overall mark of 4-15-0, 1-8 in conference play.

Both of Kuchenbecker's tallies came on similar plays. He gave Roger Williams the margin for victory in the 13th minute when he received a long through-ball from Sean Janson and directed a low shot from the right side of the box just inside the far post. His second-half marker in the 54th minute came after Chris Chieffo slotted a perfect ball from the center of the field towards the right side. Kuchenbecker ran it down, took a few touches and drove a shot into the left side of the goal.

Nick Nelson had three saves to record the shutout. His best stop of the afternoon came in the 84th minute when he lunged to his right to deny a scoring bid by UNE's Dan Good.

Nate Diffin was credited with two saves in 77:19 of playing time for the Nor'easters. Tom Benoit came on to make pair of stops the rest of the way.
