Four Eagles named USA Football Preseason All-Americans

Preseason All-Americans

NEW YORK, N.Y. - A pair of Husson seniors, defensive lineman Matt Pellerin and quarterback Joe Seccareccia, headline four Eagles named to the 26th USA College Football Division III Preseason All-American teams.

Pellerin was a second team selection, while Seccareccia was tabbed to the third team. Junior defensive back Kenny Sweet Jr. and sophomore defensive lineman Luke Washburn were honorable mention selections.

Pellerin notched 40 tackles last season and was a second team All-Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) pick. The Leeds, Maine, product totaled three sacks, 5.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a blocked kick.

Seccareccia was a second team All-ECFC pick a year ago after completing just under 50 percent (122-of-245) of his passes for 1,490 yards, 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, including a single-game school-record five touchdown effort against Mount Ida (Mass.). The Bangor native also rushed for 201 yards on 68 carries with three scores. Seccareccia has tossed at least one touchdown pass in six straight games.

Sweet Jr. and Washburn were second team All-ECFC selections in 2014. Sweet Jr., from Portland, Maine, led the league with seven interceptions to go along with 31 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and six pass breakups for a defense that tied for a league high with 19 interceptions.

Washburn, who hails from Litchfield, Maine, compiled 31 tackles, eight tackles for loss, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries for a defense last season that allowed league-lows in per game average for total yards (287.3), points (18.4) and rushing (92.8) and tied for a league-high with 27 sacks. The Eagles returned four turnovers for scores, most in the ECFC.

Selections are made by coaches, sports information directors, pro scouts, certified players' agents, members of the Football Writers of America, Metropolitan New York Football Writers Association, New England Football Writers Association, Philadelphia College Football Writers Association and the staff of USA Football News.

Husson kicks off the 2015 campaign Saturday, Sept. 5 against Alfred (N.Y.) at 12 p.m. ET at Winkin Sports Complex.

Husson unanimous pick to repeat as ECFC Champion

CASTLETON, Vt. - Husson has been selected as the unanimous preseason favorite to repeat as the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference champion in a vote conducted by the league's coaches, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon. This marks the first time in league history a team has been picked unanimously to win the league title.

The Eagles, who went 7-0 in league play a season ago, received all eight first place votes and 64 points after finishing 8-2 during the 2014 season and reaching the NCAA Division III National Championship. Fifteen players who started at least five games in 2014 and 78 letterwinners return for the 2015 campaign. The returnees include six position starters and 39 letterwinners on offense and nine starters and 39 letterwinners on defense.

The offense features six starters of at least five games from a year ago: quarterback Joe Seccareccia, tailback John Smith, wide receiver Deon Wiggins and linemen Matt Archer, Seth Batty and Jon Walker.

The defense also includes nine starters back from 2014: linemen Matt Pellerin, Luke Washburn and Jeff Turcotte, linebackers Ellis Throckmorton and Bryant Wade, safeties Rick Orio and Kenny Sweet, and cornerbacks Jordan Hersom and Marquis Jiminez.

Kick returner Dylan Walton is the team's top returning specialist.

Norwich (Vt.) placed second in the poll receiving 52 points followed by Castleton (Vt.) and Mount Ida (Mass.). The trio tied for second place with identical 5-2 marks in league play last season. SUNY Maritime (N.Y.) placed fifth followed by Gallaudet (D.C.), Becker (Mass.), and Anna Maria (Mass.).

Husson kicks off the year at Winkin Sports Complex, hosting Alfred (N.Y.) on Sept. 5.

Football: Price announces coaching changes

Aug 26, 2015
BANGOR, Maine - Husson head football coach Gabby Price has announced five coaching staff changes effective immediately for the Eagles. Grant Caserta has been hired as defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. Ed Mestieri has been named linebackers coach. Don Farnham has been tabbed as the rovers coach for the Eagles 4-2-5 scheme. Taylor Ewen will coach the defensive line, and P.J. Dowe has been tasked to coach inside receivers.

Caserta joins the Eagles staff after spending the 2014 season as a linebackers coach at Maine Maritime. He spent the 2013 season at his alma mater and NCAA Division II member Saginaw Valley State (Mich.) as a graduate assistant linebackers coach and video coordinator. Caserta was a four-year letterwinner and three-year captain as a linebacker for the Cardinals from 2007-10. He was voted All-GLIAC in three seasons from 2008-10.

Mestieri enters his 40th season coaching at the collegiate level and most recently served as director of football operations and defensive assistant for two seasons from 2012-13 at Maine, helping lead the Black Bears to the CAA Championship in 2013 and a berth in the FCS playoffs.

Mestieri was the head coach for eight seasons from 2004-11 at Colby (Maine) and totaled 23 years from 1989-2011 with the Mules as the offensive coordinator, offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator.

Mestieri has previously coached at Norwich (Vt.), Dartmouth and Kent State.

Mestieri was a four-year letterwinner at Springfield (Mass.) from 1972-75.

Farnham joins the staff after spending 13 years (1993-97/2006-13) as the head football coach at Brewer (Maine) High School. He spent two seasons as a student assistant at Maine from 1985-86 and coached four seasons at Dartmouth from 1987-1990, helping the Big Green win two Ivy League championships.

Ewen comes to Husson from NCAA Division II member Lindenwood (Mo.) where he was a graduate assistant offensive line coach in 2014. He was a student assistant at his alma mater, Anna Maria (Mass.), in 2013. Ewen was a three-year letterwinner at guard for Anna Maria from 2010-12.

Dowe was a four-year letterwinner at tight end for the Eagles from 2006-09, playing in 34 career games and totaling 29 receptions for 334 yards and seven touchdowns.

Dowe was also a member of the Husson baseball team in 2007.

Husson kicks off the year hosting Alfred (N.Y.) on Saturday, Sept. 5.
