UMPI Baseball Hits the Road

The University of Maine Presque Isle Baseball team begins a 10 day trip today. The wet weather throughout the Northeast has been giving Coach Mike Pankow fits.

Pankow:”So far we have had three or four different opponents lined up and with weather rolling into Pennsylvania. We finally decided that we are going down to Washington DC when we were originally supposed to play in Portland Maine. It’s been interesting just getting games lined up.”

Pankow says Friday’s game with Galludet out of Washington DC wasn’t finalized until early this afternoon...

DUTCHMEN DITCH OWLS 8-0

Anneville, PA -- Three pitchers from Lebanon Valley College worked to allow just one UMPI hit to take a 8-0 victory from the Owls today.

Jared McCabe started and Paul Smith and Michael Houseal worked out of the bullpen to allow only 3 Owl baserunners on the day. Presque Isle would have only one runner reach second base in a game that was delayed because the Owls bus was stuck in traffic for more than two hours.

Lefty starter Matt Curry looked strong until the 3rd inning when Lebanon Valley's top of the lineup loaded the bases and allowed the first run of the day on an infield error. Cleanup hitter Brett Fundell later singled to right, scoring 2 runs and giving the Dutchmen a 3-0 lead.

The Dutchmen had an inning to remember in the 4th, scoring 5 runs on seven consecutive singles and did not record an out until the 9th batter of the inning stepped into the box.

Tommy Collins recorded the only hit, singling in the 3rd with two outs. Collins would be caught stealing to end the inning.

The Owls (2-4) will now venture to New York City to play Vaughn College in a doubleheader starting at 3:30 PM Wednesday.
