USM baseball already looking ahead to 2016
Coach Ed Flaherty believes this year of seasoning will serve as a table-setter for the team's young talent.

HARWICH, Mass. — On more than one occasion this year, Ed Flaherty said junior shortstop Sam Dexter is the best player he’s coached in his 30 seasons at the University of Southern Maine.

That’s saying a lot.

Dexter, who hails from Oakland and played at Messalonskee High School, was named the Little East Conference player of the year earlier this month. He led the Huskies in batting average (.441), home runs (eight), total bases (133), runs (57) and RBI (44) while hitting 21 doubles and three triples. He was also hit a team-high nine times and tied for the team lead in stolen bases with 11.

Dexter Named ABCA Division III Player of the Year

APPLETON, Wis. -- The American Baseball Coaches Association announced its 2015 ABCA/Rawlings Division III All-Americans and the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Bat Award Thursday evening at the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament banquet.

University of Southern Maine junior shortstop Sam Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) was named the recipient of the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Bat Award as the National Player of the Year for Division III. Dexter is the second USM player in the last three years to be named the Division III Player of the Year by the ABCA. Tucker White received the honor in 2013.

Dexter and senior right-handed pitcher Andrew Richards (South Portland, Maine) are among the 15 players named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-America First Team. The All-American honor is the first for both players. They are the 27th and 28th USM players since 1982 to receive ABCA All-American honors.

The 2015 Little East Conference and D3baseball.com New England Region Player of the Year, Dexter posted a .441 batting average during the 2015 season. The slick-fielding shortstop collected 82 hits, including 21 doubles, three triples and eight home runs, in 186 at bats. He also had a team-leading 44 RBI and 11 stolen bases. Dexter became the 26th player in USM baseball program history to reach the 200-career hit plateau, achieving that milestone against Framingham State University on April 12.

The winningest pitcher in the history of the Husky baseball program, Richards finished his senior season with an 11-5 record with nine saves and a 1.73 ERA en route to earning the Pitcher of the Year honor. Richards pitched 114 1/3 innings allowing 22 earned runs on 94 hits and 19 walks while striking out a single-season record 108 batters. Richards is the second USM hurler, joining Logan Carman in 2013, as the recipient of d3baseball.com’s top pitcher in the region.

Dexter and Richards led USM to the 2015 Little East Conference Championship, marking the Huskies’ third title in the last four seasons, and were named the Co-Most Outstanding Players of the recent Little East Conference tournament.
