Four Named Men’s Indoor Track & Field Captains

Huskies Open 2014-15 Indoor Campaign at Home on Saturday

GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine first-year men’s track and field head coach Ryan Harkleroad announced this week that senior Kevin Desmond (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy) and juniors Jeremy Collins (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle), Zach Miller (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding) and Dan Webb (Acton, Maine/Sanford) have been named captains for the Huskies’ 2014-15 indoor track and field team.

Desmond and Miller will be serving their second term as captains during the indoor season. This will be the first season as captains for Collins and Webb.

The Huskies open their indoor season this Saturday afternoon (1:00 p.m.) hosting the USM Invitational at the Costello Sports Complex field house. Harkleroad returns 20 athletes from last year’s squad that finished second in the Little East Conference Championships, fifth in the Division III New England Championships, and sixth at the NEICAAA New England Championships (all NCAA divisions).

“(Miller, Desmond, Webb and Collins) have been exemplary members of the men’s track and field program, and have gained the respect of their teammates, coaches and fellow competitors. While they have each had a great deal of success on the track, it is the example they set in practice, in the classroom, and in the community that makes them the ideal leaders for the program. They each aspire to continue competing at the national level, but take their roles as leaders among the team seriously and put a great deal of effort into encouraging and supporting their teammates,” commented Harkleroad.

A 2013 indoor All-American in the 800 meters, Desmond returned to the NCAA Division III Championships in 2014 as a member of the Huskies’ 4 x 400-meter relay team that was seeded number one and ran the second fastest time in school history - 3 minutes, 17.95 seconds - at the meet. Desmond also anchored the relay to its school record time of 3:13.56 at the NEICAAA New England Championships.

A two-time Little East Conference Track Athlete of the Week last season, Desmond earned Division III All-New England honors in the 600 meters after placing second with a time of 1:21.85, and All-LEC accolades in the 1,000 meters and the 4 x 800-meter relay. Desmond is the school record holder in the 800 (1:51.70) and a member of the record 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 relays.

An All-Little East performer in the 400 meters and the 4 x 400 relay, Webb was the leadoff man for the Huskies’ record-setting 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 relays. Webb finished third in the 400 (50.94) and fourth in the 200 (23.38) in the LEC Championships. He also had a second-place finish in the 400 (50.15) at the State Championships. Webb ran a season-best time in the 400 finals (48.91) at the NEICAAA New England Championships en route to a ninth-place finish.

Miller was having an outstanding indoor campaign last winter until he was sidelined by an injury during the conference championship meet. Also an LEC Track Athlete of the Week, Miller earned an All-Little East citation in the 55-meters. He swept the dash and 200 meters in the first two meets - the Bowdoin Invitational and the USM Invitational - of the 2013-14 season, and won the 400 meters at the Bates Invitational.

Heading into the championship meet portion of the schedule, Miller won the 200 meters (22.86) and placed third in the 60-meter dash (7.14), and was a member of the winning 4 x 400 relay (3:23.58), at the State of Maine Championships.

Collins established himself as one of the premier sprinters in school history during the 2013-14 campaign setting school records in the 200, 400, 500 and 600 meters, and being a member of the record 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 relays. He won the 500 meters at the ECAC Division III Championships with his record time of 1:05.02, and won the 600 meters at the Little East meet with a school record time of 1:21.35.

An NCAA individual qualifier in the 400 meters and as part of the 4 x 400 relay, Collins earned Division III All-New England and NEICAAA All-New England recognition in the 400 meters. At the NEICAAA meet, Collins broke the school record in the 400 during the trials (48.49), then came back the next day to lower the standard with a fourth-place finish in the finals (48.37). Collins was also picked as the LEC Track Athlete of the Week on four occasions last season.

After the season-opening meet this weekend, the Huskies will be off for end-of-the-semester exams and the holidays, and return to action at the USM Open on January 10.

Indoor Track & Field Sets Records at USM

Gorham, ME - The Husson University women's indoor track and field team saw personal records fall as they competed at the University of Southern Maine Open on Saturday.

Kelly Kashian (Caribou, ME) finished second in the high jump at a height of 1.52 meters (4'11.75"), and she finished fourth in the triple jump.

Brooke Hoople (Bedford, NH) took second place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.74 seconds and just missed the finals in the 55 meter dash, running a 7.93. She took ninth in the long jump with a distance of 4.44 meters (14'7.0").

In the mile, Alecia Palmer (Presque Isle, ME) took fourth place with a time of 6:03. Meanwhile, Jaclyn MacDonald (Old Orchard Beach, ME) set a new personal record in the pole vault by a foot and finished in fifth place (2.44 m, 8 feet).

Husson's assistant hurdles, pole vault, and jumps coach, Dana Seekins, said of the meet, "It was a good day with a short squad after being on break."

Erin Bolduc (Augusta, ME) set a new PR in the long jump at 4.41 meters and qualified for the finals in the 55 meter hurdles. Faith Burnett set new personal records in both the shot put and weight throw. She threw 9.22 meters in the shot and 9.12 meters in the weight throw and finished sixth in both events.

"I had a chance to see our younger athletes' development and saw separation in talent and where we can continue to strive," said assistant throws coach Chris Jones. "We have a better direction for indoor now."

The meet was not a team scoring event, and the Eagles will next travel to compete at the Bates Invitational on January 16-17.

Huskies Take Six First-Place Finishes at USM Open

GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women’s indoor track and field team earned six first-place finishes and numerous New England Division III Championships qualifying marks Saturday in their return to competition after a five-week layoff at the USM Open. The meet was a non-team scoring event.

Senior Peyton Dostie (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) won two events and took second in a third to highlight the Huskies’ performance. Dostie was first in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 24.62 seconds, and in the long jump with a leap of 5.21 meters (17-1 ¼). She was second in the 55-meter hurdles with a finals time of 8.53 seconds. Dostie’s times/mark all met the qualifying standards for the New England Division III Championships in February.

Junior Nicole Kirk (Scarborough, Maine) took the top spot in the 200 meters and was second in the 55-meter dash. Kirk tripped the timer in 26.84 seconds in the 200, and ran a 7.47 in the 55 trials and 7.50 in the finals. Her times qualify her for the NE Division III meet.

Senior Anna Whitaker (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) won the 1,000 meters with her time of 3:11.64. Classmate Catie Keenan (York, Maine) was first in the mile with a time of 5:19.23, and took third in the 1,000 meters finishing in 3:16.37. Whitaker and Keenan (mile) both qualified for the NE DIII meet.

Joining Dostie in the winner’s circle in the field events was sophomore Ashley Belanger (Biddeford, Maine) who led a 1-2 USM finish in the shot put. Belanger had the winning throw of 12.12 meters (39-9 ¼). Junior Sabrina Sodders (Alstead, N.H./Fall, Mountain) was second in the shot with a mark of 12.07 meters (39-7 ¼), and third in the weight throw with a toss of 11.60 meters (38-0 ¾).

Senior Emily Panciera (Monson, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) had a strong day with a second-place finish in the 800 (2:24.68) and a third in the 3,000 meters (11:47.40). Sophomore Jasmine Boyle (Brunswick, Maine) had a pair of thirds in the 800 (2:39.27) and mile (5:49.04).

Freshman Rachel Ingram (Winthrop, Maine) had a second in the triple jump (9.92 meter/32-1 ½) and a fourth in the long jump (4.71 meters/15-5 ½). Sophomore Briana Pina (Cumberland, R.I.) was second in the weight throw (12.09 meters/39-8), and classmate Molly Gibeault (Brooklyn, Conn./Woodstock Academy) equaled her personal best in the pole vault (3.05 meters/10-0) to place second.

The Huskies will head to Bates College next weekend for the Bates Invitational.
